Notes

Holds and paging with Cate:  Cate showed us the updated request form.  The request type is at the top and the requester information has also been moved up.  There are also error messages when we enter something incorrectly.

We discussed whether the pick up location could ever be changed.  Will patrons have a default address/pickup location associated with them?  We would like those to be editable as well as the date.

Office delivery discussed as a request option.  In some systems, an office delivery item would be automatically checked out to the patron when it has been checked in at the receiving/delivering desk. Operator intervention is considered to not be useful in larger operations.  In this case, the transaction would be considered fulfilled and could no longer be editable (archived for reporting purposes).   This differs from a hold, which gets checked in at the holding desk and awaits the patron for pickup and fulfillment, at which point the transaction is closed.

Where do addresses come from?  If a patron wants an alternative address, how can that be protected in an IM feed?  Cate explained that the User Management SIG has agreed that a separate module that would protect this information will be needed.  Would we need a flag for primary address and perhaps one for delivery address?  Is there a preferred address associated with each patron?  What is a deciding factor in whether someone gets the option of office delivery?  Usually it is the patron group however, there are times when it is a remote location or a mobility factor.  Are patrons associated with a particular library?  Can an override be done by bulk application for an identified group?  What happens when there is no default address?  This is rare for most of us.  Delivery address should be required - if not address, there should not be a delivery option.  We would like this to be locally configurable.  Would a noes field be useful for instructions from a patron?  Yes!

Fees and Fines with Holly:  Focus on manually applied fees and fines.  We would like the ability to be able to distribute the payment, that is allocated it to more than one transaction or other outstanding fees.  Holly asked: where doe the money go?  And the answer, of course, is different for all of us.  In some places it would go to a central location, in others it would go to the unit library that owns the fee.  State institutions may also have different regulations.  Staff and faculty fees may go to payroll while students may be sent to the bursar.   Chicago does not send fees to the bursar but at a certain time of the quarter, a patron may have a block applied if the amount owned reached a certain level.  At NC State, a citizen fee may be sent to the sate income tax office.  (We were all envious).  Maria says that there are laws for each state that must be followed by HBZ libraries.

Workflow: bring up user record; select manual charges; select what fine or fee is needed; enter amount (field would be editable).  Some fees could have default amounts but not all of them.  Can new ones be added?  Should we use "other' category with a notes field?  Who will have the ability to create new categories and/or edit fees?  We would like a level of flexibility but with fewer folks able to do it (tighter permissions).  What about replacement copies?
