Searching in Inventory vs. Orders/Receiving

@Dennis Bridges @Laura E Daniels

Normalization (e.g., search behavior with leading/trailing spaces) – should the apps be consistent? Are there exceptions?

Laura compared searches in Receiving and Inventory. Example: An ISBN search in Cornell's FOLIO with a trailing space worked in Inventory, but not in Receiving

Jessica (via chat): "Can we make search behavior the same where possible? I know some apps will have different needs, but this seems really basic."

Anne-Marie: "I thought you were heading to a different place - in Orders and Receiving, we normalize the ISBNs. And in Inventory, there is a Normalized ISBN search, but it's actually normalizing in a different way"

Jenn Colt - Should trailing whitespace be trimmed as a matter of practice by FOLIO?

Jacquie noted that some older Duke barcodes have an intentional space at the end.

Jenn Colt (via chat) - "for us check in check out didn’t work on barcodes with a space at the end (because the physical barcode didn’t have the space i guess)"

Dennis - A lot of work has been done on search performance - quicker searches in Juniper. Elasticsearch would open up a lot of possibilities for search and filtering.

ISBNs in Inventory and Orders are stored in different places, so searches for an ISBN in each app are going to different places.

Felicia (via chat): "Copy & paste sometimes picks up extraneous HEX characters that appear as spaces"

Ann-Marie (via chat): "I think the inconsistencies happen because of different developers and something that may have not been a conscious decision. And the only way we find those inconsistencies is by folks doing these searches in different apps and identifying them. So I think this is a valuable discussion"

Acquisitions should be consulted on search behavior. Heather McMillan will add it to a future agenda for acq.

The app interaction group will be consulted as well.

Inventory search enhancements in the works will be seen in Kiwi.
