Updates from MOL team for Poppy

MOL team started work ~1/2 year ago. Focus is Metadata Management/MARC record management and working to provide services for Polish libraries to implement FOLIO. They presented earlier this year about MARC templates functionality: 2023-05-25 Metadata Management Meeting notes.

008 field in proper order in quickMARC

  • Previous order was not based on order defined by LOC
    • Catalogers are used to LOC character positions
  • Added hint in each to make subfield clear, e.g. ctry = place of publication,...

Improved authority linking

  • Previously clicked on reference term and go to MARC authority record to see corresponding authorized term then go back and start search over with found authorized term.
  • Now in top right there is Link button with hint that says Link <authorized term> , click link and it automatically links to authorized term

Added relevant sort to Inventory App

  • Will be covered when Inventory Search is presented in coming weeks

Questions:

Did you consider changing Start date/End date to the MARC Date1/Date2 (since these are not necessarily start or end dates)?

  • Names are derived from OCLC, but agree would be better to change the names to Date 1/2.
  • Khalilah: Will add as enhancement request to change the labels. Challenge to know whether to follow OCLC or LC
  • Laura: When there is a discrepancy we should follow LC MARC because OCLC changes are always very OCLC specific.
MARC cataloging updates

Presentation - slide deck includes all functionality since Iris

Experimenting with change to release notes using overview above. Please provide feedback to Khalilah.

Inventory App

  • Create new MARC bib record via UI
    • From Action menu - New MARC Bib record. Not templates but needed pre-req
    • Required to update LDR
    • Hit save and close, SRS and connected Instance is created
  • 008 order improvement - see MOL above
  • 008 handling improvements
    • Can edit quickmarc even if bad 008 was loaded

MARC Authority App

  • Automated auth control linking
    • if you have assigned permission you will be able to click "link headings" to automatically link headings to bib fields. Only works if eligible bib field has a $0 - no string matching.
    • Can set up which fields should be eligible for automated linking. Tenant level configuration via API only. No UI setting.
    • Currently 6xx is disabled by default (until subject thesaurus validation is in place) but this may change for Poppy.
    • This is not a batch feature. Only supports single record automation via the UI.
    • Question: what happens if you have $0 but have not loaded auth records?
      • If user doesn't have permission then the link button will not appear.
      • If permission is not disabled and link is attempted, the red toast will appear that says "we haven't found any records"
  • Failed link bib report
  • Improved manual linking - see MOL above
    • Additional improvements since Orchid
      • Auto-populate bib field values when linking
      • Default to search and browse based on bib values
  • Note: currently http is not populated in $0. Will be fixed in future and script will be provided to update the links. Looking into http vs. https.
  • Question: single record import not bringing in $0 from OCLC. What is the strategy going forward for syncing those workflows?
    • DI perspective would be ideal to protect $0 but challenging with repeatable fields.
    • Khalilah has talked with other folks (Gloria - LC and Doug - OCLC) on this topic and know it is a problem that needs to be solved.
    • Laura: part of problem is with OCLC.
      • Chicago and Cornell have raised issue with them.

Key bugs and enhancements addressed

  • See slides for details

Search and Enhanced Consortia Support will be covered at future MM SIG meeting

PC update

2023-11-09 Product Council Agenda and Meeting Notes

Announcements: TC is setting down a subgroup on translation/multi-lingual support in FOLIO. Purpose is discussing the possible direction the project might want to go with this.

PC subgroup - SIG working group report and discussion:

  • New SIG reporting process
  • SIGs vs Working Groups (typical time bound; but some formed under a PO)
    • SIG setup checklist
    • Entity Management/BIBFRAME SIG discussion at future PC meeting (11/30/2023) - Felix and Raegan are invited
    • Data Import, which is an ongoing group, that might be a prime candidate for changing from working group to a SIG, with a SIG convener from the community (MM-SIG, Acquisition-SIG)
    • BELA (Bulk Edit & List App working group (MM-SIG, UM-SIG)

It is not just needed because that is what we are used to, but when I am comparing what I see in FOLIO to what I see in MARCedit, it gets really confusing … It will be great if they will now look the same!

09:28:48 From Felix Hemme To Everyone:
The big pro using the Lokalise web service for translations is that the translations are shared with all Folio installations, and are not only locally available for one tenant. That is the difference compared to the solution from Knowlede Ware.
