PO Update: Inventory

@Christine Schultz-Richert

FOLIO Cataloging Capabilities: Quesnelia updates starting at slide 33

Quesnelia enhancements include: set instance/bib record for deletion, literal dollar signs, LCCN searching, 008 contextual help, authority source for MARC authority records, and bulk edit enhancements. Listed enhancements and bug fixes can be found in the slide deck.

Demo of selected enhancements: LDR and 008 contextual help, LCCN searching in MARC Authority App, HTML page updates, search modifiers in Advanced Search (in MARC Authority app)

Q: Is 008 still sensitive to deleting spaces? Yes, Folio checks the character length.

Investigated approaches for new development such as MARC validation, classification browse, etc. List in slide deck.

Q: Will this change to leader functionality allow for changing workform, e.g., from serial to monograph? Yes, can change the Blvl and it will dynamically change based on selections made in the LDR.

Place of Publication facet

@Christine Schultz-Richert

Main questions:

  • Thoughts on using the 008/15-17 values (mapped to the full value per https://www.loc.gov/marc/countries/countries_code.html ) for this facet

  • If 008/15-17 values are used for the facet, what does this mean for the existing publication place field? Assuming we can’t just replace, since the 260/264 contains more information about the place of publication. New field? Display?

Feedback:

  • Printing dates are important for Special Collections librarians.

  • The 008 field is not granular enough for us. For example, special collections librarians need to be able to find all the title published in Venice or Bologna between 1500 and 1800.

  • Related use case for serials maintenance when publishers change locations within the same country/state.

  • Q: Could these needs be addressed by adding the ability to add custom fields?

    • A (Raegan): No, the information is already in MARC in free text fields. Could allow for more granularity for searching in Lists App.

  • Concerns about adding more facets adding clutter

  • Probably not as useful as a facet, would use more as a search term (+1)

  • Place of publication as an index would be very helpful. Using the 264/260 for the index.

    • Plus an index for publisher

  • In general, everyone very in favor for creating indexes for publisher and place of publication instead of a facet.

  • For an all search, <<publisher all "Venice">> seems to work at least as a stating point. not saying it meets all use cases

  • Query search is powerful but tricky to use. Needs more granularity and documentation.

  • Facet for date makes sense to me. Often you want to filter for resources from a date range, so facet > search

  • Publication year is also really important, and as a date range.

  • Date facet as it currently exists is not the best for publication year.

  • Date delimiters could be customized at tenant level for local needs.
