MARC Modification TestingJennifer

Quesnelia Spreadsheet:

With the testing in Poppy, Jennifer found that several features didn't work consistently or as expected. It was thought to suggest a flow that the community could agree on and start from there. This happened in Quesnelia. The link to the spreadsheet above has the flow outlined for Quesnelia on where MARC modification actions can be placed in relation to other actions in a job profile. Testing proved successful except when the marc modify action came after the action profile or at the very end of the job profile as the last action at the same level as the match profile.

Added documentation to: Data Import Marc Modifications for MARC Bibliographic Records.

Spreadsheet for Poppy:

  • Making DI UI consistent with quickMarc and Bulk Edit. For example, blanks are denoted by the \ rather than a space.
  • Significant challenges with using MARC modifications with updates. One idea shared in lab was to see if we want to start with a baseline approach of how and where we need to have MARC modifications, develop that, and then build on that foundation.

Discussion notes:

Poppy spreadsheet results are somewhat contradictory. Only consider Quesnalia going forward. Any MARC Mods already working in Orchid should continue to work in Poppy.

Modifications on create are acting similarly to Poppy and earlier.

Modifications on updating are working at the beginning and the end of the job for updating instances.

Modifications are not working for updating the MARC bibliographic record when the modification is after the action (at the same level as the action or at the end of the job profile at the same level as the match).

See the spreadsheet for Quesnalia for results of individual tests and details about the intended flow.

MODDATAIMP-897: Adding MARC modifications to single record overlay doesn't respect field protections

Testing in Quesnelia: Jennifer test this and it is working in some cases but not all. In the SRI job profile to overlay an instance, field protections were protected. However, as part of a solo job profile where the marc modify action was after the action to update or the last action in the job, field protections weren't respected. As part of a solo job where the marc modify came first before the match on the instance, the field protections where respected.

Discussion notes:

Appears to be working when the marc modification is at the beginning of the job. Not clear what is expected at the end of the job. Needs more testing in Quesnalia.

Would expect that if the marc modification is at the beginning of the job that the fields would be removed from the incoming record, but not removed from the FOLIO record and the field in the existing FOLIO record would be retained.

Not supporting MARC modify at the end may have been an intentional decision. Ryan will check back with the team.
