30MinILL discussion

Discussion on:

  • how other FOLIO libraries are conducting interlibrary loan workflows
  • what external tools people are working with
  • What ILL systems are FOLIO institutions using?
  • What level of integration - if any - does it have with FOLIO?
  • What do lending and borrowing processes look like in FOLIO?
  • Are people using special locations, service points, mat types, loan types, patron groups, etc. to support these processes/workflows?

5 minStaff slipsIn order to prioritise work:
How annoying is this bug? Staff slip print: Stuck in Landscape, the option to change that is missing

Meeting Notes

ILL Discussion

  • Mark Canney (Lehigh) – PALCI (tri-state consortium) went live on Project ReShare after 8 month pilot
    • More on Project ReShare: https://projectreshare.org/
    • Public discovery for PALCI: https://ezborrow.reshare.indexdata.com/
    • Consortial borrowing had been programmed by RELAI, but ~3 years ago system began exploring a community-based alternative
    • Working with Index Data
    • 10 ILS involved
    • 35 million item records+
    • Built on FOLIO for staff interface and VuFInd for patron discovery
      • For discovery: at point of request, asked to authenticate – search and browse are available to guest
    • Go-live went reasonably well; responsive system
    • There is an auto-responder that will say if an item is owned, but missing, etc.
    • Other consortia coming live/considering
    • Each institution has its own FOLIO tenant
  • Andrea Loigman (Duke)
    • ReShare built by IndexData on FOLIO platform, but don’t need to be on FOLIO to participate
    • Only open-source consortial-sharing platform for ILL returnables
    • Plans to expand to non-returnables and CDL
    • Automated load-balancing
  • Brooks Travis (MO State)
    • Are there plans for unmediated ILL?
    • Mark – There is an auto-responder that takes some mediation out of the equation, but to fill the request, you need to print the slip and process.
  • Andrea Loigman
    • Duke uses Illiad for non-consortial borrowing
  • Rudolph Nottensteiner (University in Munich)
    • Uses software by OCLC
    • ILL controlled by Central Interlibrary Loan Server for libraries in Bavaria
  • If external system uses NCIP (or a similar protocol)
    • NCIP protocol would create record for receipt and circulation
  • Otherwise (with system not integrated)
    • Either patrons have to check another system for loans, or
    • Dummy records for libraries (lending) and dummy/fast-add items (borrowing)
  • Clara Fehrenbach (Chicago)
    • Receive request through external system
    • Staff process in external system and NCIP carries out transactions that create records/transactions in OLE (and in the future FOLIO)
    • Plan to leverage the FOLIO API with Illiad
    • Already using Request API in OLE to communicate with remote storage; hope to expand for use with ILL in FOLIO in the future
  • Lisa Perchermeier
  • Marie Widigson (Chalmers)
    • Home-grown ILL system
    • Borrowing: for book requests, these are transferred to FOLIO and requests created for the patron.
    • Circulation and notices are handled in FOLIO.
  • Brooks Travis
    • Current plan for Inn-Reach in FOLIO is to use loan types as the hook for circulation rules
    • Institutional patrons on lending side
  • Is FOLIO being built to interface with only ReShare or other platforms as well?
    • Not necessarily, but priority for development is typically given to features with the widest possible use.
    • However, community members can pool together resources to develop and contribute back to the community if desired.
  • Rebecca Pernell
    • Would be very cool to see development where a Stanford patron could do on-site checkout at Duke, but maintaining in their local account in the Stanford tenant.
    • Would necessitate development of the user record – and potentially circulation rules – to allow use of custom fields in the circulation rules/proxy relationship for cross-institutional on-site lending.

  • Julie Bickle – discussion of bug https://folio-org.atlassian.net/browse/UICIRC-673
    • How annoying is this bug?
    • Discovered in Juniper
    • Staff slips are hard-coded to print in landscape mode
    • Chalmers indicates that staff slips need to continue to work well on receipt printers
    • MO State, Cornell, and Duke reiterated this would be a concern for size (readability) and cutoff on the staff slip on receipt printers
    • Marie will test in Juniper Bugfest and report results
    • Consensus is this should be prioritized highly; Julie hopes it is next in line for queue after in-progress bug.
