Overview

As of the Ramsons release, the ability to browse by Instance-level Classification is supported using new browse options in the Inventory app. All Classification numbers can be browsed within the “Classification (all)” option, or browsed within the specific types of “Dewey Decimal classification” or “Library of Congress classification”. Currently, limiting by other Classification types is not supported.

The three different browse options are populated in the “Name” column, followed by “Classification identifier types”, and finally the Actions buttons.

  • Name: Fixed list containing the three currently-supported browse options of “Classification (all)”, “Dewey Decimal classification” and “Library of Congress classification”

  • Classification identifier types: In Edit mode, this will contain a dropdown for selecting any configured Classification identifier types.

  • Actions: This will contain an edit icon which will support the ability to select Classification identifier types.

    • Note: No ability to add or delete records in the table

New permissions

In order to configure Classification browse, users must have the following permission: Settings (Inventory): Configure classification browse

ECS notes

Currently, classification browse configuration must place take in the Settings app within the context of the central tenant. Classification identifier types created here as well as those configured for browse will be shared and available to all member tenants.

Basic configuration

The default configuration will be as follows:

  • No Classification types selected in “Classification (all)”

  • No Classification types selected in “Dewey Decimal classification” or “Library of Congress classification”

Configuring Classification (all)

For the “Classification (all)” option, the default configuration will have no Classification identifier types selected. However, this means that ALL Classification types will be browsable within this option. It is important to note that if specific types are selected, only those types will be included in this browse option.

If you would like to exclude any types from showing up in this browse option, edit the “Classification identifier types” dropdown to select the specific types that should be included.

Configuring type-specific browse options

Existing functionality allowed for the configuration of new Classification identifier types in Settings, as well as the modification of existing ones. With the new Classification browse, multiple Classification types can be browsed under the type-specific options of “Dewey Decimal classification” and “Library of Congress classification” regardless of the name of the type. For example, the following can be configured:

  1. Two options of “Additional Dewey” and “Dewey” can both be browsable under the “Dewey Decimal classification” option

  1. Newly created identifier type “DDC” can be configured to be browsable under the “Dewey Decimal classification” option

Sorting per configuration

Classification types in the “Classification (all)” option will be interfiled together, sorted alphabetically. For any types configured for the “Dewey Decimal classification” or “Library of Congress classification” options, they will be sorted per the algorithm of the respective types. The sorting algorithms are calculated within mod-search, the results of which are not stored in the Instance schema.

Notes on Classification field - MARC-source instances

The Instance-level Classification field for MARC-source records is mapped from the bibliographic call number (see Default MARC Bibliographic-to-Inventory Instance Mappings for default mapping). This is distinct from the Call number field that is found on the Item record.
