Linked Open Data Group presentation and update on activities

@Laura Daniels

Slides - Linked Open Data in FOLIO started to meet in 2024.

History: The LOD came out of Entity Management Working Group (2020, 2021-2023). The EMWG’s outcome is listed in UXPROD-features. This work has informed the LOD work.

LOD began as a subgroup of MM-SIG. Charge is here Linked Open Data SIG home page. The LOD has broad regional representation in the SIG, and have experimented with meetings in three different time slots, but now settled on 2 different dates/2 different meeting times.

LOD has held demos of:

  • JCricket (Shared-VDE)

  • Sinopia

  • FOLIO Linked Data app (The FOLIO Marva version)

  • National Library of Sweden (NLS) presenting the use in Libris

LOD SIG will continue knowledge sharing and communicate with vendors and metadata practitioners. And identifying properties we need to implement in Inventory, e.g. URIs, and administrative metadata.

Challenges and opportunities:

  • LOD SIG is not driving the development of the FOLIO Linked Data app

  • Desire to support multiple approaches

  • Hypothetical for some / Practical for others (like LoC, NLS)

This work happens with great synergy with other international communities.

Linked Data vs. Linked Open Data. Is there concerns about data being Open. FOLIO is interested in engaging with vendors who also support Linked Open Data. Nancy explained that Open also means the flexible and non-prescriptive choice of tool. The editor does not need to be an integrated editor, but linked with FOLIO Inventory as 3rd party tool.

LOD SIG don’t have a dedicated product owner.

A huge mile stone will be NLS - who today do original cataloguing in BibFrame - implementing FOLIO. The long term solution will be to totally quit MARC.

Nancy points out that Inventory evidently need to change/adapt to a data pool not in MARC format, and having data living out side of Inventory - External data storage cached.

Lisa underlined that the Discovery question is an important part of this. Lehigh is currently testing the Shared-VDE solution and eventually display data in vuFind. Tod explained that both VuFind and Black Light do have the potential for interpreting other options than MARC.

The Linked Open Data SIG will work in Jira, to be fully transparent. The LOD SIG has two PC liaisons - Lisa McColl and Charlotte Whitt
