Two functions need to be available when checking in a claims returned item
Button 1: Checks in item. Assigns responsibility to the library. Does not charge patron any overdue fines.
Button 2: Checks in item. Assigns responsibility to patron (e.g., if found in return bin). Charges patron overdue fines.
Permissions for checking in items
Some employees should not be able to resolve at all without supervisor override; some should be able to resolve only by assigning responsibility to the patron, and some should be able to use either button
Notifying a designated person would be nice, but is not necessary for v1
Searching for a claims returned item
for UChicago, would be difficult to go back to manual process, & other universities interested in moving away from their manual processes
In-house use
Uses check-in screen
Whenever an item is available & recently returned, and checking it in does nothing to change its status (may not be a factor), that's an in-house use
Cornell uses a scanner and loads data into Voyager, but if FOLIO operated on tablet could make process more portable
