Quick update on the FOLIO Community team

Given world events, FOLIO has been impacted - quick discussion.

  • Mike G. gives an update
  • Lotus release timeline under discussion
Membership letter

Review the proposed letter to be sent to current FOLIO members

  • Final comments?
    • What is the audience?
      • Send letter to list of MoU contacts and some more of each institution (that are active in FOLIO)
      • Translate to chinese?
      • Action item: Collect feedback from Kevin (for the chinese community) and Harry for EBSCO
      • Action item:  review all attachements and create proper documents
      • Mike G. will take care (smile)
    • General agreement: Good balance between short overview and granularity
    • Different letter to be sent to:
      • Groups active but not yet members?
      • Groups registered for FOLIO news but not yet active
 MOU changes

Review changes to proposed MoU document

  • Changes in levels: how to balance the numbers?
  • Contribution of money and people possible in future
  • Discussion around how to balance the amounts / contributions compared to the work, that needs to be done (e.g. release building in future)
  • Investment and Co-Ownership in regard to tasks, maintenance, etc.
  • Idea: Founding of an Advisory Council to meet a few times     – Tom please add!
    • This would be a "High Member Level" Council–so every member that gave $ above a certain level ($15k or $25k?) would be invited to a special meeting (at WOLFcon annually, semi-annually or per release?) to provide their perspectives and input to the CC, PC, TC.
  • Ian: more contributions could raise the level of decision making how the money is spend - more contribution means more influence on decisions how the money is spend
  • We will continue the discussion in the next meetings

Chat:

Von Boaz Nadav Manes (Lehigh) an alle 04:23 PM
Increase your membership dues to at least the next level help fund resources?
Von Tom Cramer an alle 04:24 PM
Thank you officers for drafting this.
Von Dracine Hodges an alle 04:24 PM
+1 thank you
Von Kathleen Berry (UMA/5C) an alle 04:33 PM
I like 15
Von Dracine Hodges an alle 04:34 PM
can we have 4 levels? 50, 25, 15, 5?
Von Tom Cramer an alle 04:34 PM
Let’s keep $25k please
Von Ian Walls an alle 04:35 PM
what are libraries actually buying with these dues?  it seems more like a donation than a purchase
Von Julie Bickle an alle 04:36 PM
+1 Ian
Von Tom Cramer an alle 04:36 PM
^ agreed @Ian. Can we talk about what additional steps would bring in terms of benefit?
Von Sullenger, Paula an alle 04:36 PM
It's a membership, like ARL and other organizations
Von Dracine Hodges an alle 04:36 PM
I see it as them buying or supporting sustainability for the community.
Von mir an alle 04:37 PM
"Donation" as wording is very difficult for European institutions. Membership is better with a clear Explanation, what the Money is spend for.
Von Tom Cramer an alle 04:38 PM
This is true, Kirstin. I was on the Board of a non-profit that went through a 2 year transition from “donation” to “membership” specifically to open up contributions from European members
Von Kathleen Berry (UMA/5C) an alle 04:38 PM
Members with MOUs can have folks run for governing bodies. that's a benefit for institutions looking to influence
Von Tom Cramer an alle 04:38 PM
like that @Kat?

Von Boaz Nadav Manes (Lehigh) an alle 04:39 PM
That is mentioned in the MOUS

Von Ian Walls an alle 04:39 PM
it has always seemed backwards to me that Institutinos have to pay in order to volunteer to serve

Von Tom Cramer an alle 04:41 PM
And the last thing we want to do is turn away $ from people who can give it, but can’t allocate FTE

Von Sullenger, Paula an alle 04:43 PM
A&M can't guarantee anything now, our developers probably won't report to the library in September

Von Besara, Rachel M an alle 04:43 PM
+1 Tom.  We are in a position right now were we have some funds relatively - but we are having staffing challenges.  In 2 years this may be the opposite.

Von Tom Cramer an alle 04:46 PM
If I’m a library paying a vendor to host, I could easily rationalize giving $ to the vendor to host AND giving money to the project, as long as the money to the vendor allowed room in my budget to make an additional contribution (all compared to licensing another product).

Or if I’m paying the same
Which model does FOLIO
Von Ian Walls an alle 04:48 PM
as a support vendor, my goal is to empower my partner libraries as far as they want to go with FOLIO.  Usually that means they want me to be their agent in the community
I'd like to be able to contribute more to FOLIO myself, but there are a lot of barriers to do that (especially development)
Von Dracine Hodges an alle 04:49 PM
I like that idea Tom because they really are different things.
Von Besara, Rachel M an alle 04:49 PM
I agree!

Von Tom Cramer an alle 04:51 PM
Also let’s keep in mind OSS has a strong message of self-empowerment. There are good intrinsic reasons a library might make contribs completely out of self-interest

Von Boaz Nadav Manes (Lehigh) an alle 04:51 PM
Feeling good about it
Von Tom Cramer an alle 04:51 PM
I think we should keep it
Von Ian Walls an alle 04:52 PM
so, removing the contributing member level makes council service pay-to-play
Von Tom Cramer an alle 04:53 PM
less than .5 FTE becomes a liability for the project

Von Ian Walls an alle 04:54 PM
Brooks' Law

Von Dracine Hodges an alle 04:56 PM
I like the idea of creating a feedback/input mechanism.

Von Tom Cramer an alle 04:59 PM
that’s the endowed fund model that Dracine mentioned. :)
Libraries are very familiar with that.

Continue discussion from last meeting on Resource ModelCC

Topic not touched on Feb. 28, 2022 - postponed

  • what is our theory of resourcing for development
  • what is our theory of resourcing for maintenance
  • what do we want from project partners?
    • libraries
    • commercial
  • how do product teams fit in
  • how do we onboard new contributors
  • what kind of resourcing do we want?
    • in kind?
    • financial?
  • how do we balance innovation vs. maintenance? who does each?
