Use cases not covered by MARC search query api

I need to find records for books that were published pre-1501 for Special Collections. Inventory queries for publication dates (mapped from 264$c) have not been fruitful due to the variability of the field. I'd like to query 008 position 7 (008.07_04) for >1 and <1501.
