Tiers

Resource sharing between libraries takes many different forms. The following "tiers" of resource sharing distinguish the various types of resource sharing.

Interlibrary Loan

Sharing of resources between two libraries that have no formalized relationship.

Mixed ILS Mediated 

Libraries that are part of a consortial resource sharing network may run different ILSes and utilize external software to mediate requests and borrowing.

Cross-tenant Unmediated

A consortial resource sharing network where all libraries are housed in individual FOLIO tenants (either on the same FOLIO installation or multiples installations) and necessary data exchange occurs across the owning library's and patron library's tenants.

Single-tenant Unmediated

A resource sharing arrangement within a consortium where each library is set up like a branch library within a single FOLIO tenant. FOLIO's location hierarchy is used to determine loan rules for the consortium. Patron and item databases are shared by all libraries in the consortium.

Mediated

A type of circulation activity that requires the patron's library to facilitate the transaction with the owning library on behalf of the patron.

Unmediated

A type of circulation activity that allows a patron to interact directly with the owning library in order to request, recall, borrow, renew, and return.

Owning Library

The library that owns the item that is being requested/borrowed.

Patron Library

The library with which the patron placing the request is affiliated.

Pickup Library

The library where the item is to be picked up.
