Publication patterns: Chronology labels

A chronology label can be used to add any of the following to the issue label:

  • Weekday (the weekday on which the issue is published)

  • Month day (the day of the month on which the issue is published)

  • Month (the month in which the issue is published)

  • Year (the year in which the year is published)

Not all serial issues will require all of the above options; for example a monthly publication might only use the Month and Year and omit the specific date or day of the week. To avoid configuration of unnecessary options when adding a chronology label you can decide the level of detail you need by specifying the chronology format as one of

  • Chronology Date = all details included

  • Chronology Month = only month and year included

  • Chronology Year = only year included

Once you have selected the appropriate chronology format you can then configure how each part of the date will be formatted:

  • Weekday format (for Chronology Date format only) options are full and abbreviated week day names in sentence or upper case:

    • Monday

    • MONDAY

    • Mon

    • MON

  • Month day format (for Chronology Date format only) options are cardinal or ordinal numbering for the day of the month

    • 3

    • 3rd

  • Month format (for Chronology Date and Chronology Month formats) options are full and abbreviated month names, or the month’s number:

    • October

    • Oct

    • 10

  • Year format (for Chronology Date, Chronology Month and Chronology Year formats) options are two or four digit year:

    • 23

    • 2023

A configured chronology label will look like:

Note that commonly (and in MARC) the four seasons are treated as “chronology” elements, in Folio these are treated as a set of sequential labels and handled instead as a special type of enumeration.
