Date

Agenda
Housekeeping (5-min.)
How do libraries do Inventory/Shelf-checks in FOLIO?
Homework and Pre-Reads
None! This does not seem to be documented. Please come with questions about inventory/shelf-checking.
Our definition of shelf-checking: By inventory, we mean making sure that the items in a certain shelving location are accounted for and are in the correct order. Some institutions call this shelf-reading or shelf-checking, among other terms. At some institutions this is a function of RA, at others it would more properly belong to MM.
Useful Resources
None so far!

The FOLIO Implementation Group meeting focused on shelf checking strategies in FOLIO. Two speakers presented their approaches:
Â
Patrick Waite from UMass:
Uses a process where stacks management scans barcodes on floors
Runs scanned data against FOLIO database using SQL and Python scripts
Produces reports to find misplaced books, inconsistent barcodes, etc.
Uses LDP Light database to avoid overloading FOLIO system
Shared code repository for others to use
Â
Laura Krueger from Stanford's David Rumsey Map Center:
Conducts first-ever shelf read for their special collections
Uses Tableau dashboard to generate shelf lists by locationÂ
Manually checks items against spreadsheets, noting errors/issues
Process is very time-intensive due to unique nature of collection
Facing challenges with call number ordering in FOLIO
Â
Key discussion points:
Different approaches for general vs. special collections
Importance of barcode placement for efficient scanning
Challenges with call number sorting in FOLIO
Potential use of FOLIO APIs or apps like bulk edit for data extraction
Interest in sharing and adapting processes across institutions
Â
The meeting concluded with appreciation for the presenters and an agreement to continue discussions on Slack.
