WeCat demo live

Demo of a specific WeCat feature: the Headings management in WeCat by Tiziana Possemato

Three ways to manage headings (add, edit, delete)

  1. Working directly on index.
    1. Search relevant index. Example given: name search
    2. If heading is present in index, it shows in second position, so previous and successive headings show.
    3. If heading is not present, one can be added right then, by creating a new heading.
    4. This heading is then present in the index, but it is not yet present in the authority file, but an authority record can be created from this starting point.
    5. This heading is saved in the relational database. It is stored in the Name Heading table (NME_HDG)
    6. Each heading is identified with a unique identifier.
    7. From the index, a heading can be copied to create a new one.

  2. Working on the cataloging worksheet.
    1. An existing heading can be used from here, or a new one can be created.
    2. To see if a heading already exists in the index, a search is done.
    3. When heading is found, additional details like a relater term can be added, along with the MARC coding.
    4. A title heading can be created from here as well. The appropriate subfields will appear as options to add details to a title heading.
    5. A row is added in the Name Access Point table. (NME_ACS_PNT). The bib item number is included in this table.

  3. Working on the authority worksheet.
    1. From the index again, a full authority record for the example name can be created.
    2. A cross-reference can be created. Several types of cross-references can be created. See, See Also, See Also From, Seen From are options. Example given: Variant form of the same name.
    3. From the index, an authority record can be created. The information already in MARCcat can be seen in the brief authority that appears, based on existing information, such as cross-references.

There is a possibility to created a Name/Title heading. There is a Name/Title index. Name headings can be related to title headings, to appear in the Name/Title heading index.

Q&A
All
  • Question: Does VIAF create heading or authority records, or both?
Answer: Loading from VIAF, new heading and authority record are created.
  • Question: Files of authority records loaded from OCLC - how are bib records updated after an authority load?
Answer: When you load a file you can define matching criteria so the incoming headings relate to the bibliographic records. The system allows the user to define the outcome - desired behavior of matches.
