MARC validation (link to notes from MarcCat)

Not yet discussed: Unicode validation across FOLIO

Order <> Inventory interactionCharlotte Whitt

Demo of creation of brief instance, holdings, and item records triggered by an order

From latest sprint review: order app interaction with inventory (slides)

It’s now possible to play with the order app in the demo (http://folio-snapshot.aws.indexdata.com), and you can see how when you create a record in the order app, the data then flows into the inventory app as a instance record.

When an order is pending there are no underlying records in Inventory

Once the workflow status is changed to open, "item details" information (e.g., title, publisher, publication date, edition, material type) – or can look up Instance in Inventory – and location information, both from PO line, an Instance record, with Holdings & Item record(s) are created in Inventory.

Codex Vision Document

The Codex Vision - TC Review

Laura has copied the CODEX vision document into a Google doc this will be submitted as a comment on the wiki

Some points from our discussion:

  1. Seems that underlying area of concern is the dispute about the definition of the CODEX and the definition of the Inventory.  Is the Inventory taking over what the CODEX was originally intended to do (responsibility creep)?  Is the Inventory recreating a monolithic system?  Is the issue that it’s a communication issue and the scope of each need to be made more clear?
  2. Chicago made a good point, that the Inventory is still ‘plug and play’ – while the CODEX is more built into the system.  How fundamental is the CODEX going to be to FOLIO and what is the implication of that for other decisions, because of ‘baking in’ things because of the CODEX?  Note that the data is not flowing 2 ways in this graphic, and it’s causing concerns about the implications of the CODEX.  (Even Sebastian is struggling with envisioning what the CODEX can concretely accomplish for the user?  The abstraction is not well connected to the real job).
  3. Question from Aaron: Is the use of the CODEX compulsory?  Sebastian thinks it’s baked in, but that could be reduced how much.
  4. Stephen Pampell is going to give a talk to FOLIO participants about microservices.  Could he practice on us and explain next Thursday what are apps and what are microservices?   Maybe we aren’t understanding things in the right way?
  5. Are "domains" a useful way for us to discuss this? Domain is a concept, not anything concrete in FOLIO as it stands.

Can we break this document and our comments/questions down into some more discrete areas? Here are Laura's initial suggestions (would love input from others):

Inter-app communication: direct vs mediated through Codex

Role of Inventory vs Role of Codex – especially related to normalization, data storage, and indexing

Authorities/Identity Management

What parts of this have impacts on development and need to be addressed immediately?
