Announcements

Last year, ARLEF (Academic Research Library Exchange on FOLIO) had an ad-hoc meeting on the status of Data Import. The ARLEF IT Directors are looking to schedule an update on progress on Data Import scheduled for 2/28/2024 at 3pm EST. Documentation: 2023 ARLEF issues on Data Import, 2023 ARLEF Call |Slide Deck. Jennifer Eustis will report back to MM SIG.

Multiple/Alternate Graphical Representations

document

(draft of document originally created with Christie Thomas, Jacquie Samples)

Summary - More than one script representing the same value, e.g. MARC 880s. Thinking mostly about titles, but need to be clear about which other elements this is needed for. Each script should be treated as equal, indexing and display. See above document for details.

-What changes are needed to the Inventory data model?

-How should these changes display in both View and Edit modes?

Notes:

  • Ability to have labels for script identifier. Folks agree it is needed. E.g. including this in bibframe
  • Toggle on/off for particular scripts
    • What was meant by this? Potentially turning off display of particular languages, e.g. you have no expertise on staff for it
    • Tenant level setting? User?
    • Would be dependent on a particular script being labeled
    • Likely an improvement for a second iteration
  • Is this a problem for FOLIO China community? Laura assumes not transliterating but will reach out to confirm
  • Model should accommodate unlinked 880s also
  • Connexion display is a good model
  • needs to accommodate more than 1 script
  • doc needs to include all elements that we want this functionality for. Reach out to Laura or add to doc directly
  • open questions about display
  • Use cases for having this data in instance?
    • ordering in original language
    • receiving verifying using original script
    • searching inventory to look for dups
  • Next steps
    • Small group to meet on questions raised today, will add to doc and share back with MM SIG asynchronously. Reach out to Laura E Daniels
    • Will likely need to go to tech council
    • Jira Legacy

Updating bound-with holdings records

Deferred till next week
Wellesley College is undergoing a major library renovation. All collections have been moved to remote storage for the duration, barring a small number of materials held back for teaching. We have applied temporary locations for all Item records (and journal/serial Holding records as they have no Item records). During our spot checking to make sure we caught everything, we found oddities stemming from bound-with items. Because bound-withs in the FOLIO data structure consist of one Item record attached to multiple Holdings records, the temporary location is only being applied to the parent/primary Holding record and not the other Holding records. Not an ideal situation for managing and providing accurate locations of our materials.

What is being presented to the end user is extremely confusing when they can see that one title is available but another is not.  Wellesley College used VuFind as the library catalog.

  1. Is this what we are expecting (or wanting) to see in our discovery layers?
  2. Do we need to rethink the implementation of Bound-with handling in FOLIO and change to a one Item record & one Holding record attached to multiple Instance records?
PC updatesJennifer Eustis

The PC met today, 2024-01-25 Product Council Agenda and Meeting Notes, to discuss Direct Consortial Borrowing (DCB) integration. There is new back end functionality that is for the most part contract work for Mobius and Galileo, for borrowing. Open RS is the platform for resource sharing and includes DCB, document delivery, and are talking about ILL and CDL. There is no impact for those institutions that won't use this functionality. For those using ECS, the consortial FOLIO, you need DCM. The consortial system would install open RS and any member/partner institution would need DCB as a client to connect to it. Please see details and the record for a more thorough explanation of this functionality.

BELA (Bulk Edit and Lists App)

BELA meet this past Tuesday, 2024-01-23 BELA Meeting Notes. Amanda Ros is the new liaison to the App Interaction SG. We discussed a performance issue detailed in MODBULKOPS-211 and 212 where larger files slow everything down. This Spike will investigate the issues to try to identify what the problem(s) are. There was a good discussion on errors versus warnings. For example, the group through that duplicate entries in the incoming file would be a warning whereas if one identifier brought back multiple records, this would be an error. We continued the discussion of what we expect for updating one property with no change in value and updating two properties with no change in one value.

Data Import Working Group

DI meet yesterday, 2024-1-24 Data Import Subgroup meeting. There is now a new spreadsheet to track issues, Data Import Implementers Topic Tracker. The hope is that this will provide transparency on when issues were discussed, if there is a Jira associated with it, and the progress of the issue. We will also be creating an audit functionality spreadsheet and will start with the expected behavior for deduping the 856. We've asked Ryan to get a summary of how this functionality works now from the developers. We are looking for volunteers to help with adding issues to our topic tracker.

We might want a tenant, but not user level setting. We don't have a lot of foreign language items or language expertise, so we would generally want to see only the transliterated form.

MARC Model A:  Fields 880 are used when data needs to be duplicated to express it in both the original vernacular script and transliterated into one or more scripts. There may be unlinked 880 fields

09:27:38 From Gerhard, Jeffery to Everyone:
Thanks a lot to everyone who worked on this proposal for alternate graphical representations. From a Library of Congress perspective, we are very interested in this potential development and would like to endorse what the community finds most helpful. One topic we might want to add to the discussion is how mapping from MARC 880s could work most effectively
