Presentation on new reading room circulation functionality

Thomas Trutt Andreas Mace
Kajsa Bäckius

UXPROD-1835

Link to slides

Purpose:

The purpose of this feature is to create a modified workflow that enables patrons to use certain items within the library. These items are typically stored in closed stacks or are restricted in the Integrated Library System (ILS). Patrons can request these items, which are then delivered to a designated staff area for in-house use.

Functionality is not tied to reading rooms; it is separate functionality, it is about circulation in reading rooms

  • it is an extension of the current Requests app

  • There will be changes in settings UI (please see slides)

  • New tokens will be added

  • New request status will be added “Open - checked out to patron”

  • there will be 2 new filters in Requests app

  • in Check-in app a drop-down will be added which sets the check-in function

  • comment in chat by Brooks: I really wish I could have been in the meeting where this was discussed with RA SIG 🙁. I feel like there is an alternative approach that would dovetail very nicely with an “alternative loans” workflow. I’ve seen some items with a LOT of notes

    • Brooks and Thomas will discuss this after the PC meeting

    • Charlotte in chat: The feature you talk about Brooks is that: UXPROD-4398. Not scheduled, and XXL < 30 Days work? > yes

  • Jeremy: are there other than reading room that would fit the same pattern?

  • Brooks: had the same in mind; we could utilize the loan process to fulfill the requirement; the presented functionality would be a separate workflow and that could be avoided

  • Thomas: with the proposed functionality workflows are simplified because existing workflows do not need to change; statistics work differently (better) with proposed functionality

  • Andreas: presented workflow tries to grant flexibility and a lot of use

  • Alexis: we need to decide how we name the functionality to avoid potential for confusion

  • Thomas will go back to the working group and discuss options

  • Name of reading room access app should be changed as well out of the same reasons (e.g. room access)

  • Brooks in chat: I really think this should be more tightly integrated into the existing circulation apps
Rather than a standalone UI experience

  • Andreas: The idea is to use the existing circle apps. Check-out, requests and check-in. But perhaps you mean something else?

  • Thomas: Im not sure what you mean brooks.. It is using the current ui, just extending them.

  • Brooks: Ok. I thought you were proposing a new app

  • Thomas: Oh no.. the opposite.. extending the current apps only. Sorry about that..

  • All of the work would be in mod-circulation and ui-checkin/ui-checkout as well as requests app and ui-requests

  • There are many use cases that would be solved by this new functionality

  • Jana: I would be very interested in Hearing the other use cases of libraries - still learning About the different libraries in the world :)

  • Anja: Could also work well for all kinds of equipment that should be available for a specific patron for a longer period of time, but Needs to returned to a Service desk in the evening.

I really wish I could have been in the meeting where this was discussed with RA SIG 🙁. I feel like there is an alternative approach that would dovetail very nicely with an “alternative loans” workflow.

Like Building Use only vs. a reading-room use only?
16:27:08 Von Brooks Travis an Alle:
I really think this should be more tightly integrated into the existing circulation apps
16:27:19 Von Brooks Travis an Alle:
Rather than a standalone UI experience
16:28:03 Von Thomas Trutt an Alle:
Im not sure what you mean brooks.. It is using the current ui, just extending them.

The idea is to use the existing circle apps. Check-out, requests and check-in. But perhaps you mean something else?

16:28:14 Von Brooks Travis an Alle:
Ok. I thought you were proposing a new app
16:28:39 Von Thomas Trutt an Alle:
Oh no.. the opposite.. extending the current apps only. Sorry about that..
16:28:40 Von Brooks Travis an Alle:
So all of the work would be in mod-circulation and ui-checkin/ui-checkout
16:28:55 Von Charlotte Whitt an Alle:

16:28:58 Von Thomas Trutt an Alle:
As well as requests app

folks someone stepped into my office right as we got into this - I'm here and can help distinguish if that is helpful
16:36:46 Von Jana Freytag an Alle:
I would be very interested in Hearing the other use cases of libraries - still learning About the different libraries in the world :)
16:37:13 Von Jana Freytag an Alle:
I mean the other uses of this feature ;)
16:40:10 Von Jana Freytag an Alle:
Those would still be used in the reading room Right?
16:40:44 Von Jana Freytag an Alle:
I'm not partial on the Name at all, just interested in the other use cases.
16:41:29 Von Anja Kakau an Alle:
Could also work well for all kinds of equipment that should be available for a specific patron for a longer period of time, but Needs to returned to a Service desk in the evening.
16:41:52 Von Jana Freytag an Alle:
Also happy to see that this feature is usefull in many ways 🥳
