Synchronize with FOLIO Inventory on identifiers assigned to Item- and Holdings-level records associated with an Instance
Retrieve call number(s) assigned by catalogers in FOLIO Inventory and add to the corresponding component of the Work entity
Current situation or problem:
Placeholder for feature to cover the last mile of cataloging resource descriptions, including
holdings record
item record
A holdings record is used most extensively with serials collections, but also can apply to monographs when the monograph has many parts (e.g. multiple volumes). The holdings record acts as a summary statement of the title held by the library.
An item record is more precise and applies to each unit that makes up the collection - irrespective of format. Its the information, for example, that allows libraries to assign a specific location for an item "on the shelf."
FOLIO Inventory currently supports both holding and item record cataloging practices. In the short term / forseeable future, it makes most sense to tap into this functionality rather than to recreate as part of the Linked Data Editor. Long (long) term, however, this level of cataloging may be folded into the Linked Data Editor application.
By leveraging FOLIO Inventory for holdings and items, it is crucial that descriptive cataloging performed in the Linked Data Editor synch with Inventory. However, direct synch with Inventory is out of scope for this project. Instead, the Linked Data Editor will indirectly synch with Inventory through FOLIO SRS. As new titles are cataloged in the Linked Data Editor, the system will automatically create a new MARC record derived from the resource description and deposit it into FOLIO SRS. FOLIO SRS, in turn, will create a new Instance record of the title in Inventory.
From a workflow perspective, the cataloger will need to toggle between the Linked Data Editor and Inventory to complete cataloging workflow.
Further, identifiers created (changed, deleted) for holdings and item records will need to be added/updated to the corresponding resource description for system alignment.
It is not yet clear whether holdings-level and/or item-level information is needed by catalogers when cataloging within the Linked Data Editor application.
