Advanced Search Modal - WCAG 2.1 AA - 2.4.6 Accessibility issues

Description

These are issues that are not found when using a web accessibility compliance checker. They are found when a user is conducting manual testing with a keyboard or a screenreader.

  1. 2.4.6.b Descriptive Labels > Programmatic label does not convey purpose of control

    1. The input box to enter a search query does not convey purpose of control (see attached screenshot)

    2. The Boolean operator dropdown box does not convey purpose of control

Recommendation to fix

RULE : Labels MUST be meaningful. HOW TO FIX: Fix this issue by ensuring that the programmatic label for the control correctly conveys the purpose of the control. Generally, the programmatic label and the visual label should match.

1a. Update label to Enter search term

1b. Update label to Select Boolean operator

Verification

  • Verify that the labels are read when using NVDA screenreader.

This is great !

Hey , I changed the labels for the input box to enter a search query and the Boolean operator dropdown box. We can only change what I’ve underlined in green, the rest of the text underlined in yellow is generated by NVDA.
