On this page the application of the fields caption, enumeration, chronology for serials issues are described. This aims to the specific demands of

UB Leipzig and SLUB Dresden

General information

We are not using the the fields Caption, Enumeration, Chronology, because we do not use FOLIO for the receiving of serial issues yet. However, we thought about using fields to capture the basic values manually and to derive the values of the fields Enumeration and Caption from them. The goal is to generate automatically the values of the fields Caption, Enumeration, Chronology.

Further information:

Fields for manual input

Fields for numbers

The numbers of the following entities should be captured.

Year (first issue)

1995-01-01

This field sets the beginning of the automatic enumeration.

From this field, the value of the the year is extracted to add it to the caption.

Label volume

  • Band
  • Bd.

If a space should be added between "v." and the number, it must be captured in "v. ".

  • H.
If a space should be added between "no." and the number, it must be captured in "no. ".

Fields for separators

To enable the  derivation of enumeration, the separators of the values of the fields must be defined. The separators are added after the number of the volume or issue.

Fields for automatic input

Enumeration

We could imagine to use the field Enumeration for a kind of sorting value. It consists only of numbers and separators to enable a correct sorting. For example, the enumeration could be derived from the numbers of the volume and issue. The field should be editable manually.

  • 1/1
  • 1/2
  • 1/3

This proposal does not correspond to the definition of the field:

The descriptive information for the numbering scheme of a serial, usually identified by level and a descriptive caption. For example, level 0 = v. and level 1 = no. This means that each issue of the serial has a volume and an issue number that would appear (v.71:no.2-4).

See: https://morning-glory.docs.folio.org/docs/metadata/inventory/#enumeration-data / Enumeration

Caption

We could imagine to use the field Caption for the combination of the values of volume, issue, ..., which is presented to the user in the catalog. The values of the field are created automatically, but should be editable manually.

  • v.1 no.2
  • Bd. 3, H. 5, 1988

This proposal does not correspond to the definition of the field:

In multipart monographs, a caption is used to label a level of chronology. For example, year 1985.
