Note
titleThis page is a draft

Policy statements on this page are a draft pending final resolution with the Product Council. This page is not intended to be a statement of what FOLIO supports, but rather a page that offers help for questions in FOLIO that might be related to the browser being used.

FOLIO supports generally tries to support standards-compliant desktop browsers (See Browser support).

This includes up-to-date versions of Google Chrome (https://www.google.com/chrome/), the most common browser that is used by libraries that are implementing FOLIO. Project automated testing is done with Chrome and associated tools.

Other standards-compliant desktop browsers include up-to-date versions of Microsoft Edge, Safari, and Firefox.

What are some examples of issues that might be related to the browser I'm using?

You might start to think of browser-based troubleshooting if you are seeing issues like

  • An accordion on a record that normally you see suddenly doesn't open or doesn't display;
  • You are getting permissions errors when you try to access something that you think you should have access to;
  • You are unable to resize a FOLIO pane that you can normally resize, or you have a window that is unexpectedly off of the browser screen

What are some troubleshooting steps I should try if I think I have a browser issue?

Log out, and log back in.

First step would be to logout, and log back in to your FOLIO instance. As of Orchid (R1 2023), FOLIO does not automatically refresh sessions, you have to log in and log back out to get that to happen.

Try a hard refresh of your browser.

If that doesn't fix the issue, logout, do a hard refresh, and log back in. Info about hard refresh for various browsers can be found here: https://www.howtogeek.com/672607/how-to-hard-refresh-your-web-browser-to-bypass-your-cache/

Try a private browsing session

Chrome calls this an "Incognito" window, other browsers use a variation of "private." Basically this opens a new browser window without any of your existing browser cookies or any stuff that has been downloaded from sites ("browser cache".) So it's kind of like trying a fresh browser. See https://www.computerworld.com/article/3356840/how-to-go-incognito-in-chrome-firefox-safari-and-edge.html for how to do it.

Make sure you are running the most recent version of your browser

Without realizing it, you can end up running a browser that is not being automatically updated. This is especially true if your laptop is a work laptop being managed by a central IT department, who may choose to control when browser updates are released so that updates can be tested first. See https://www.whatismybrowser.com/guides/how-to-update-your-browser/ for a very good guide to how to update your browser of choice.

Browser tips

  • Chrome likes to prompt you to "install" FOLIO via a helpful message in the browser bar and the main Chrome menu. The box looks like this:

    You do not need to install anything. This is a Chrome quirk because it has decided FOLIO is a "progressive web app." There is no way to turn this off, but the message can be safely ignored.
  • If Folio keyboard shortcuts fail, check Chrome extensions. For example, LastPass includes a default shortcut for Ctrl + Alt + H that will override the Folio shortcut for "Go to Search & Filter pane." This can be disabled by going to Options > Hotkeys in the extension.

  • When viewing an area of FOLIO with three panes, the resizing bar between the second and third pane occasionally will not load the pane separator:

    If you hover over there the line should be, though, the cursor changes and you can drag-and-drop to resize the panes, just like in Chrome. Clicking on where the bar should be and dragging it slightly causes the bar to appear when you release the mouse button.

  • If you are wanting to mark individual records in Inventory for Data Export, the checkboxes in the second pane are not clickable. Hold down the alt key on your windows keyboard or the apple key on your mac keyboard and then click the checkbox. This bug is fixed as of Orchid.
