Agenda

1. Guest members. Aaron Trehub introduced Mike Thuman of Arkivum (https://arkivum.com/). Mike attended WOLFcon and is interested in the WG's work. The group was also joined on this call by Michael Winkler of OLE and the FOLIO PC. Michael attended the SC&A session at WOLFcon.

2. Review notes from April 23 and April 30 calls. No changes.

3. WOLFcon debrief. Michael Winkler, Mike Thuman, and Sebastian Hammer shared their impressions of and thoughts on the SC&A session at WOLFcon. Main takeaways:

  • There weren't many people at the session, but they were the right people. Things were slow at the beginning, but eventually a lively discussion developed.
  • Many people are already using archives management systems—primarily ArchivesSpace—and are more interested in finding ways to make FOLIO work with them than in building a new system.
  • That said, there are gaps in current systems. Example: ArchivesSpace is designed for archival processing and description, not discovery. Opportunity to build intermediate apps in FOLIO.
  • There is also a lot of duplicate work being done in the SC&A space. Opportunity to build consolidation tools in FOLIO, e.g. in the area of metadata management.
  • Indeed, what Erin Faulder called "metadata coordination" might be the best point of focus for the SC&A WG. Michael Winkler made the same point, saying that FOLIO can serve as "glue for moving data around".
  • WG should also focus on long-term preservation and authenticity for digital assets in SC&A (Arkivum's business).
  • It is time for the WG to engage more actively with the developer community—in the first instance, with ArchivesSpace. Sebastian said that "a critical mass" of companies and service providers may be forming around SC&A.
