Production Library -
Metadata Record Management Workflows

Recording of meeting: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1L1GNBEc_pxiOL4dzeCa2-ZJT-8ARPChe?ths=true  - Meeting starts about the 9:00 minute mark.

Metadata record management staff from MSU, Simmons and Lehigh will walk through their workflows.

  • This is the second of what we hope will be at least several sessions focused on how FOLIO sites in production (or nearly so) handle specific actions / activities / workflows. The purpose of these sessions is not to identify or prioritize features within FOLIO that might be developed down the road; the idea is to provide an opportunity for those in production to show how they are accomplishing day-to-day library operations in the current version of FOLIO (Goldenrod). There are a variety of places we could start, we decided to begin with MARC record loading and management which would include importing records, singly or in batch, from different sources (e.g., OCLC, other bib utilities, record vendors), editing MARC records, singly or in batch and overlaying, and exporting MARC records for use elsewhere (e.g., union catalogs, record cleanup, etc.).

MARC Record Load Workflows and Workarounds

Staff from production libraries will demo their marc record load workflows and workarounds as they currently exist in Goldenrod.

  • Lisa McColl - Lehigh
    • They catalog everything
    • They use one bib record for electronic resources and add platform specific holdings
    • Demo of batch import using WorldCat
    • Using VuFind API in FOLIO to find 035 $a and $c
    • Match on FOLIO HRID
    • Using LDP which not all production libraries have access to
    • Discussion of the need for documentation, but things are in so much flux it's really hard to do that now.  Some institutions might just train a few people until things are more stable
  • Ian Walls - ByWater libraries
    • No live demo
    • The ByWater libraries are using EDS, most have <100,000 records
    • Mostly buying ebooks right now
    • None are using LDP
    • Warner is using eZCat, then add in the instance HRID, using data import for instance, holdings and items are done manually
    • Washington & Jefferson - have GOBI integration, auto creates orders & instances, can overlay that instance with one generated from MARC import - HRID is the matchpoint - using 963 $a, not 001
    • Discussion of wanting to be able to automate some processes, but development is going so fast now that there is not much point in creating macros or training lots of staff.  The Goldenrod hotfixes changed import several times
