Announcements

WOLFCon preliminary schedule is available: WOLFcon 2025: Schedule
(You may need to log out of Sched to see it). Jennifer and Laura discussed possible changes to the schedule to prevent conflicts for metadata related sessions.

Jennifer: Presenters should receive confirmations via email today or tomorrow. Schedule will be posted to the WOLFcon site after July 4. Some sessions and the key note speaker need to be finalized.

Jennifer and others are working on a focus group to holistically manage e-resources in FOLIO-both in the Inventory app and ERM. An announcement to recruit volunteers will come out this month. The focus group will not start until after WOLFcon.

Library of Congress is going live with FOLIO this weekend.

Discussion of MARC searching in the UI – continued

@Khalilah Gambrell

Continue the discussion from2025-05-01 Metadata Management Meeting notes , talk about questions and next steps forward.

Homework: Please add comments and popular queries to this wiki page prior to the meeting.

During the meeting on 2025-05-01 Metadata Management Meeting notes, the MM SIG discussed MARC UI Searching Requirements and workflows using MARC searching. Khalilah’s key takeaways from this discussion on May 1 was that the MARC search will be used for data cleanup and wrangling.

Based on this discussion, Khalilah created MARC Search UI - Requirements analysis. This is a working document to add comments and ideas. This document was discussed during the meeting:

Topics discussed include:

REGEX search

Opinions expressed:

  • Due to this functionality being in MARCedit, many catalogers are comfortable with regex searching.

  • Concerns were expressed that some library staff may not be comfortable with regex.

  • Power users want this functionality, so regex should be included. However, it should not be the only search option.

Should it be included in the Inventory or MARC authority app in addition to the query builder in the Lists or Bulk Edit apps?

Opinions expressed:

  • Several members agreed it should be included in the Inventory and MARC authority app.

  • Some members preferred that it is only an option in Lists. For example, some libraries are moving away from MARC and development resources should not only focus on that one source. Also, this functionality is currently being worked on for Lists, so there would be duplicate development work to include this in the Inventory app. Also, MARC searching in the Inventory app will continue the view that this app is a cataloging tool only. Inventory app developers should focus on all users.

  • In the Lists app, the records should contain hyperlinks so users can go directly to a record from the Lists app results.

  • A MARC search in the MARC Authority app makes sense because MARC is the only source option.

  • Having this search in the Inventory app streamlines the workflow.

  • Some groups of records can only be found through searching MARC fields.

  • If you are unable to perform a MARC + Instance record search in the Lists app, there is an argument for having a MARC search in the Inventory app. Users could perform a MARC search and use the Inventory app filters. Khalilah will confirm with Kathleen whether you can search MARC and FOLIO fields in one query in the Lists app.

Based on our discussion, Khalilah stated that there is a need for a MARC search in the Lists, Inventory, Bulk Edit, and MARC Authority apps. She will talk with other POs and share further details with MM SIG in future meetings.

Khalilah asked if anything is unclear in the MARC Search UI - Requirements analysis document. Also, she will figure out a way to track the priority.

  • There was a question about ECS support. Vivian explained that with ECS each library has access to a shared database, and they have their own library database where they can store MARC, Inventory, and MARC Authority records that other libraries do not have access to. It is important to have the ability to search shared tenant records and local tenant records in the same search.

When discussing the “Questions” section of this document, Khalilah asked the group whether this work would affect other apps, such as Data Import. She will ask other POs as well. It was also mentioned that there should be consistency between searches. The Cross App discusses this often, but it is difficult because different types of data lead to different types of searching, and consistency can sometimes lead to things not working well.

https://folio-org.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FOLIJET/whiteboard/1078820881 was discussed. It was suggested an alternative MARC query builder. However, this may be an issue if combining MARC and non-MARC searches.

MM SIG members are encouraged to add their own mockups for how the MARC query search should look in the UI. You can add your own mockup on this wiki page by going to the “MARC Search- UI” folder and select “Whiteboard”. There is also a way to upload your own image under this folder.

This topic will be discussed in future MM SIG meetings.

Re: context: In addition to data cleanup and wrangling, librarians may want to search MARC for reference/discovery for fields that may not be currently mapped to their libraries' public discovery systems (such as 34X and 38X fields).

yes, but the structure is MARC so it makes sense to have MARC query ability
Laura Daniels, Julie Darken:➕

11:05:20 From Sheila Torres-Blank (she,her) to Everyone:
The searching in MARC authority is still limiting. I would love to have more precise options, whether in the App or Lists (assuming easy links back to records exist)

What additional searches would you like to see in the MARC authority app?

63 libraries who are used to looking at a MARC record sounds like a William Carlos Williams poem title to me. 😆

I think that's on the list as "Allow user to conduct a search that includes MARC + FOLIO fields"

11:12:26 From Ryan Tamares - Stanford Law Library to Everyone:
I can see that being able to search MARC and FOLIO-native data like admin notes would be powerful

Specify a particular identifier rather than Identifiers(all), which for us has been problematic for getting at 001. Access to data in note fields (6XX) or local fields (9XX).

11:13:38 From mgad to Everyone:
Not all users have permission to the list app, which means they won't be able to use this feature.

I've learn how to explain ECS to our own users....
Laura Daniels:❤️

I don't think there is any impact on Data Import. We aren't making changes just searching.

11:22:06 From Laura Daniels to Everyone:
that consistency is something the cross app sig talks about a lot and is a lot easier to imagine than it is to make happen

Field tag should NOT be required.
Khalilah (EBSCO):👍

11:27:55 From Sheila Torres-Blank (she,her) to Everyone:

Idk about regex specifically, here, but definite the ability to use wildcard characters: 1xx, 1**, 1??.
Sheila Torres-Blank (she,her):👍

11:29:10 From Ryan Tamares - Stanford Law Library to Everyone:
Replying to "Field tag should NOT be required.":
So, being able to search on other MARC elements (subfields etc.) independently of field tag. Is that right?

11:29:10 From Sheila Torres-Blank (she,her) to Everyone:
Replying to "Field tag should allow regex, like 5?? or ?00":
basically what I was getting at

11:31:32 From Vivian Gould to Everyone:
I could create a mockup to my own preference, but an official MOBIUS mockup would be a much slower process. At least one committee would have to weigh in.
Khalilah (EBSCO):👍

11:32:23 From Lynne Fors to Everyone:
Where would you want us to share the mockups?

11:32:22 From Vivian Gould to Everyone:
Should we post these to mm?
