Main topics

  • Meeting with Discovery SIG

@Nicole Trujillo

@Demian Katz

  • Discovery SIG crossover meeting

  • Curious about what we are doing and how it crosses over, and what we would like to see

    • want to ground in reality, so D will talk about barriers, etc. to implementation (VuFind)

    • Demian; state of LD in VuFind

      • been talking about in community since 2010 (that’s interesting, but how do we use it)

      • can use a variety of APIs to augment things, but not using LD technologies; very old & unchanged; would like a more modern perspective and use graph data available but has not been community momentum

        • some installations in the wild that have LD implementations for augmentation

        • would like a generalized system with plug-ins

        • what are the compelling use cases

      • 2 sides: obtaining the data & what to index locally; having best practices

    • indexing linked data

      • Cornell stores a local copy of the authority file & enhance with variant names etc.

    • user features and testing

    • VuFind, and other discovery options

    • current projects related to discovery and LOD

      • EBSCO working on authority graph; do not know how they will address authorities outside local repository; still in early development phase; how to use with different vocabularies (Demo of EDS scholarly graph implementation)

  • BF Interoperability Group

    • interoperability + openness

  • Missing data: the data need not be perfect in order to get going. MARC has never been perfect.

  • Use cases can help to navigate where to go/what to do next, e.g. enhancing data for a specific purpose.

  • Areas for further exploration: user testing, connections between storing and indexing BF or MADS RDF and user features; users have strong notions/expectations of what a library catalog does and doesn’t do. How do we find a way to simple, elegantly open minds about what catalogs can do/be?

  • Next steps: identify institutions with discovery LD use cases across platforms and find commonalities. Shared approach for Discovery (similar to shared editor integration (API) approach). Experiment with services that take advantage of identifiers; explore linky MARC, authorities. Get on the bridge, but don’t stay there! Hybrid approaches.

  • Additional topics:

    • @Cult pilot project with Index Data, PALCI

    • NLS using ElasticSearch

    • Blue Core Postgres indexing

    • Stanford uses the EDS APIs

  • Questions from LOD SIG

    • Which discovery platform(s) is(are) using the data?

    • Are these platforms/features open to the entire community?

    • Is the LD being used open, editable?
