Implementers' Guide To Label Printing

Implementers' Guide To Label Printing

Introduction

As of December 2024, FOLIO currently has no native app/functionality for label printing. These are the main strategies for label printing with FOLIO:

  • LIBstick

  • Spine-O-Matic

  • OCLC

  • Build a custom solution using APIs

  • Hand-wrangle labels in Word or another program

For more information about Label Printing in FOLIO proper, see UXPROD-1316: Format and print of spine labelsIn Refinement

The Options

LIBstick

Used by: Holy Cross, Cairn, Valparaiso Univ.

LIBstick is a popular solution that integrates well with FOLIO. See: https://libstick.org/folio/

For a demo of LIBstick, see 2023-02-14 FOLIO Implementers Meeting Notes. (Approximately 8:30-22:00 on the recording.)

Cairn uses LIBstick. See the below presentation from Stephie Kaceli.

Pros:

  • Great support

  • Easy to use

  • Excellent experience setting it up

Cons:

  • Another thing to pay for

SpineOMatic

Used by: TAMU, University of Missouri, Wellesley, MOBIUS

SpineOMatic is another popular solution. It relies on middleware to work with FOLIO:

For a demo of SpineOMatic, see 2023-02-14 FOLIO Implementers Meeting Notes. (Approximately  22:00-35:00 on the recording.)

MOBIUS uses SpineOMatic and created these instructions: https://www.mobiusconsortium.org/node/2118
Galileo uses SpineOMatic and created these instructions: https://libguides.galileo.usg.edu/c.php?g=1312618&p=10478518

Pros:

  • Does not have a subscription cost

  • Gets the job done and is very customizable

Cons:

  • Challenging for a novice user to set up

OCLC

Used by: Eastern University

OCLC has a program that allows users to create label templates and print label lists, with many customizable options. This is a detailed tutorial of how to print call # spine labels once the books or DVDs are cataloged in FOLIO.

You can watch a video tutorial HERE.

  1.  Log into OCLC.

  2. Metadata > Record Manager. Under Index, select OCLC #, and search the book by OCLC #. You can find this in the Folio Instance Record.

  1. Record > Send to > Label Print List

    1. This should automatically send the record to the label print list Call # Spine Labels.

  2. Follow steps 2 & 3 until every new book is added to the label print list.

  1. Metadata > My Labels > Label Print Lists > Call # Spine Labels

  1. Double-check to make sure that every spine label is aligned correctly. Here is an example of what it should look like:

  1. Select Print to download the image to your browser, and print.

  1. Delete labels from OCLC so the next print job starts blank.

Additional notes from Robyn Cunningham at Eastern University: The only thing that's not included is how to actually create the template that will be used over and over. I think the video linked in the document shows users how to create a template. There are also pre-made templates that may work well for some users, but I had to make my own. For that, I took the physical sticker sheet and a ruler and calculated the measurements, which worked perfectly.

Custom Solutions

Used by: University of Chicago

Some libraries make and use custom solutions. For example, the University of Chicago has created a Spine Labeling App (one of many at their organization) which they use to print spine labels. Their app is designed to print individual call number labels via a Zebra thermal printer. Please see the powerpoint presentation below for further information.

For a demo of UChicago's custom solution, see 2023-02-14 FOLIO Implementers Meeting Notes. (Approximately 35:50-42:20 on the recording.)

Pros:

  • Completely custom, therefore meets all the institution's needs

Cons:

  • Maintenance of any custom solution is the library's responsibility

  • Even if the solution is custom, not all users will have the technical background to make desired modifications
