Notes

We need to determine level of interest

Use cases, it is for ILL or as bib utility

Paula said that the Big Heads have discussed dissatisfaction with OCLC because they feel like it is not behaving like a non-profit, and they are subsidizing activities they don't want to pay for.

Lloyd realized that if we are going to use ReShare software, maybe it would make sense to fold this into the ReShare project.

It needs a home.  That could be a new FOLIO SIG, or a new OLF project, or maybe as part of the ReShare project.

We talk about how we could use ReShare.

Lloyd is thinking of the SkyRiver model where there are three levels.  The individual libraries are at the lowest level.  They are part of a ReShare group, so their records are harvested into a ReShare system.  Then the central BibUtility will harvest records from all the ReShare systems into a database that everyone can get records from.

Noah suggests that you don't need the middle level.  You could have a system where the central BibUtility harvests records directly from the individual libraries.  If it kept track of holdings, and who was lending to whom, then it could both manage resource sharing and function as a bib utility.

It seems like the two layer model would be more efficient.  Three layers would require someone to work on each layer.  Two layers might require less work.

Lloyd realizes after the meeting that the three layer model would not require much cooperation from the ReShare project.  That could be implemented by using their software without asking them to make any major changes to what they are planning to build.  We could just harvest records from their systems.  The two layer model would require them to make some structural changes in the system they are building.  This would have to be integrated into their project.

Charlotte says that we need to get an idea of how much database this will require.  Lloyd says we could check with INN-Reach managers to see if they have a formula for how big their database will be relative to the number of libraries in the group.

Since it looks like this project will involve ReShare on some level, we need to start having conversations with them.  Charlotte and Peter say they will give Sebastian a heads up.  We should update the vision document in Google to reflect this discussion.  Lloyd will work on that.

It needs a name.  It is hard to talk about without a name.  That is homework.
