Who needs to bulk deletes authority records

• ECS: Consortial administrators (shared) or catalogers at the member library for local records

• Staff focused on authorities

• Systems coordinator

• Should we restrict delete with certain permissions?

• Should these permissions be separate from editing?

• Same roles in ECS, but more likely to be local catalogers over consortial administrators

• Catalogers, especially with local files

Why delete authorities in bulk

• Quality control

  • Records didn’t match

  • Differences in how the control numbers are setup

• Receive file (such as from authority vendor) for records that need to be deleted, as an example - LC headings change

• Locally preferred terms instead of using a national vocabulary

• When deleting, do we need to make any additional changes to the data in the records that are going to be deleted? No

• Some sort of indicator that the authority record is linked to a bib record (such as making a list of the bib UUIDs)

Why edit authorities in bulk

• Global data change in authority records to update the links to the controlled bib headings

• Do we need to edit the fields that determine the authority source file (such as changing the prefix in the 010)?

• When editing authorities, are there fields we shouldn’t be able to edit?

  • May need to be able to edit the 001 or potentially editing the prefix in the 001 to update the authority file

• Libraries may want to keep the previous terminology even if the national files have changed, perhaps strip other administrative data (like notes)

  • Potentially just a string that has the terminology library would like in combination with unique identifiers

How do we identify a list of records to delete in bulk

• Some sort of flag on the record that indicates it needs to be deleted (such as LDR/05 = “d”)

• For locally preferred terms, we may be looking to delete headings from national headings - potentially looking for a heading via string matching

How do we identify list of authority records to bulk edit

• Libraries may want to keep the previous terminology even if the national files have changed, perhaps strip other administrative data (like notes)

  • Potentially just a string that has the terminology library would like in combination with unique identifiers

• Partial match/starts with for authority prefix in specific field
