Data Import Working Group

Tara

  • “Data Import is considering options on how to organize itself in terms of remaining a working group under MM SIG, a working group under App Interaction, or becoming a SIG. Data Import and Metadata Mgt SIG would like feedback from this group, in particular on the question if Data Import became a working group under this SIG, what would be involved and would this benefit both groups.”

Date Formatting Questions

Tara

  • Khalilah had a couple questions here: Date formatting I think I understand what was intended, but since we are meeting anyway thought I’d ask.

Notes

  • Our primary topic of discussion today was the organizational structure of the Data Import Working Group. Jennifer and Christy visit to discuss.

  • Data Import is currently a working group under Metadata Management

    • This group has ~400 people on Slack but only ~12 regular meeting attendees

    • They are struggling with visibility and development resources

    • Original scope (designed as 3-month project in 2018) remains unfinished after 7 years

  • Data Import has outgrown its original mandate beyond just metadata management

    • Data Import touches multiple apps: inventory, finances, source record storage, potentially agreements and users

    • Priorities getting "lost in the shuffle" within Metadata Management's broad scope

  • The options being considered by Data Import are:

    • Become an independent SIG

    • Move to App Interaction as working group

    • Stay with Metadata Management

  • From our discussion, App Interaction feels that Data Import would best be served by becoming its own SIG. This would provide the visibility and independence needed by the SIG, and would better fit how the SIG actually functions. We do note that we’d like to continue to collaborate closely with the SIG, as many of our administrative problems are shared--the challenges of working across sigs, for example.

  • Data Import Working Group will continue internal discussions about reorganization and report back to the community with their decision on becoming an independent SIG.
