 Description

Current situation or problem:

The BIBFRAME editor will need the ability for catalogers to search for a retrieve resource descriptions / records from a variety of database targets, to support cataloging workflows.

Currently the Marva editor does not support discovery. This core functionality will need to be created/added to the application.

In scope

  • Ability to search for resource descriptions from LC's Data Graph irrespective of source (e.g MARC or BIBFRAME)
  • Ability to search for records with non-Latin scripts
  • Ability to compile and present results of a search query
  • Ability to construct a simple query against a specific/specified index
  • Ability to construct a complex query against involving multiple indexes
  • Ability to compare works and ability to compare instances associated by work

Out of scope

  • Comparing multiple records / resource descriptions that match the same search criteria (beyond presenting a simple search result set)
  • Retrieving a record / resource description from an external database
  • Ability to search for records external to FOLIO, specifically OCLC WorldCat as a target

Use case(s)

Questions

  • Will need to understand the search infrastructure for FOLIO (Inventory, Locate, etc.) and how to leverage it
  • Will need to understand indexing rules for records and resource descriptions in order to process queries correctly
  • Further, will need to understand indexing rules with respect to indexing fields with non-Latin scripts
  • Ability to save a search - within scope of this feature?
  • Autocomplete - within scope of this feature?

Discussed with LC Nov. 15. Base level search covered in feature will be supported in Thin Thread and continue through BIBFRAME Alpha and BIBFRAME Beta.

One question raised is how to support querying resources outside of FOLIO, especially OCLC. Open question is how / to what degree catalogers could continue using Z-processor as a means for search and retrieval via Z39.50.
