 Description

Current situation or problem:

For the BIBFRAME project, Team Citation will create a 'thin thread' representing the thinnest slice of functionality needed by catalogers to conduct end-to-end cataloging through the new Marva-based BIBFRAME editor.

In scope

The thin thread will encompass and support a common, basic cataloging use case:

  • Copy cataloging of a resource in BIBFRAME - Work, Instance, Item
  • Monographs (single unit volumes, e.g. not monographs that are part of a series)
  • English language only

Additionally, the thin thread must

  • deploy appropriate validation rules for fields/components covered in cataloging workflows
  • support the creation and use of administrative data tied to cataloging workflows
  • transform a MARC record (e.g. an IBC - initial bibliographic control - record) into BIBFRAME
  • demonstrate interoperability with Inventory
  • be able to output a resource description from BIBFRAME into MARC for distribution

The goal for the thin thread, then, is to build a BIBFRAME cataloging solution that a library could use in production for a defined set of use cases as described above.

Out of scope

The scope of this epic is limited to the thin thread only. Future flower releases will include/support additional functionality that goes beyond the thin thread scope, including (but not limited to):

  • the ability to create new authority records from within the BIBFRAME editor
  • the ability to catalog non-Latin resources
  • the ability to catalog other formats (e.g. sound recordings, serials, etc.)
