 Description

Current situation or problem:

In the result list of the Requests App the following columns are displayed:

  • Request Date
  • Title
  • Year
  • Item barcode
  • Type
  • Request status
  • Queue position
  • Requester
  • Requester Barcode
  • Proxy

In addition to those columns the

  • Effective call number string

is needed in the result list (middle pane).

In scope

This column should be sortable. Data with no call number should be listed at the top of the sorted results.

Call numbers should be able to be filtered via the existing search and filter box.

  • Matching on the call number string entered even if it is not an exact call number would be best.
For instance, if the effective call number is PL54.64.R64 2010, return it and any other matches if PL54.64.R64 is entered. This is how inventory works.

Out of scope

Use case(s)

  • Patrons a lot of the times only know the title or call number.  So we may have to look up a request by call number or jumping from the patrons summary page, if they have a lot of open requests, we may have to find the item in the list by call number.
  • Staff could use this column to verify they have the correct book in hand or if its second copy
  • An institution has closed stacks arranged by call number. All pages are retrieved based on call number location in the stacks. The retrieval staff must be able to filter the requests by call number

Martina Tumulla  - should this request only apply to item level requests OR when the request has been fulfilled?

Questions from Vega:
1. Can we confirm that we are talking only about Item call number, as opposed to effective call number, or other?

2. When using the search box to locate items with a call number, how should the search match - exact call number, the start of the call number, any call number that contains, etc.?

3. When returning results from any existing filter (Request type, status, etc.) there may be items with no call number. If the user sorts the Item call number column, where should the items with no call number fall - the top of the list or the bottom?

Comment by Erin Nettifee [ 08/Feb/23 ]

1. I would expect this to be effective call number.
2. I would want it to mirror Inventory (recognizing that is complex - because inventory uses the mod-search function - so needs more discussion)
3. I would sort the empty call number at the top - but I'm not sure if there are other FOLIO models to follow with displaying the call number.

I agree with Erin. I would expect the effective call number.

Matching on the call number string entered even if it is not an exact call number would be best.
For instance, if the effective call number is PL54.64.R64 2010, return it and any other matches if PL54.64.R64 is entered. This is how inventory works.

Sorting the empty cal numbers on top is OK.

Thank you, Erin Nettifee and Cheryl Malmborg. In the feature description & stories, we use "Item call number" - should we be using Effective call number, or Call number, when labeling the additional column and adding to the Action dropdown?

I would use effective call number, I'll update the ticket.

We'll have to address in documentation if it's on the item or the holding - it behaves like locations, so I'm not sure what is prioritized in which scenarios.

I would also use effective call number. That is used elsewhere. The column is usually 'Effective call number string'. The call number as displayed may contain elements such as volume number.

See the request detail screen or the open loans display in Users.

Thank you both for all of your help. To be consistent, I'll use Effective call number string.
