 Description

Current situation or problem

When something is checked out (to another person, to a patron's carrel), staff need to check the item in and then check it back out to the patron, rather than having an override pop-up. This happens regularly at Olin because of the faculty and graduate students who have items checked out to their studies and carrels who then wish to take the items home with them.

Feature components:

  • Currently, if you attempt to check out an item in FOLIO which is already checked out you receive the following pop-up message:

 * *

 **

  • If you click the “Close” button, you are returned to a Scan items screen which contains no item info. In order to actually check the item out to a patron, you need to open the Check in app, check the item in, then re-open the Check out app and re-scan the item barcode to proceed with the original transaction.
  • We would like an “Override” button to be added to the “Item not checked out” pop-up above which, if selected, will result in the user being able to continue with the transaction without these intermediate steps via FOLIO automatically checking the item in.
  • Upon proceeding with the check out, FOLIO should display additional pop-up messages just as it would normally. In other words, if we receive a pop-up telling us that an item is already checked out and choose to override it, we also want to receive another pop-up telling us that the item also has a request on it if that is indeed the case, etc.
  • Use case: faculty and graduate students who have items checked out to their carrels and studies frequently wish to take them home with them, which involves discharging said items from their carrel/study accounts and re-checking them out to their personal accounts. This feature will significantly streamline this process.

Perhaps a small way to help this pain point without doing a ton of back-end work would be to show the username of the item that is checked out on the modal – or, have an override option that doesn't quite do what's described in the ticket but instead you get a button to "check item in?" that would, if clicked, push you into the check-in app to check the item in. That at least would save a few clicks.
