Estimation Notes and Assumptions: More analysis needed here to see how our system will work when dynamic strings are used in the UI... need to test out a "dir" attribute set to "auto" specifically for text layout. The estimate could be reduced significantly if it works as a solution. As on UXPROD-296, setting up an RTL locale would be ideal.

 Description

Text displays right to left or left to right depending on the language. This may be supported by use of unicode, but needs to be called out individually. NOTE: this is about the modification of the text whereas UXPROD-296 Open is about the direction of the page layout.

Need more information on vertical display for Chinese etc. Is this required?

Chicago doesn't think vertical display is required for Chinese.

Comment by Tod Olson [ 03/Jul/18 ]

I think there's a question about scope. Is this only about the language of the user interface, like display labels for inputs and such, or does this include text direction when displaying bibliographic data?

This is about the language of the user interface (display labels for inputs etc). Bibliographic data would be displayed however it is stored in the database (UTF-8).

twliu do you know if vertical display is needed for Chinese?

Massoud Alshareef, based on your tests, I think we could say right-to-left is already taken care of, right?

Comment by twliu [ 17/Jun/20 ]

I don't think vertical display is needed in modern Chinese. It existed in traditional Chinese.

Cate Boerema Yes, you can say right-to-left is already taken care of. attia.alshareef

Awesome! Thanks twliu and Massoud Alshareef.

John Coburn, it seems we can close this as done. Any objections?
