 Description

Currently pick slips are printed for a selected service point (SP) that's associated with a requested item's effective location (shelving location). This particular feature of printing by a requested service point is a feature request from BNCF because their item's aren't assigned locations. During the conversation with the RA SIG, this was considered an outlier and/or edge case to print by requested pickup SP instead of an item's effective location/SP.

The way it works today matches most libraries' workflow:

  • Patron places a page request on an item
    • Page requests are placed on items that are available. The item should be on the shelf (effective location).
  • Patron selects/requests a pickup service point (SP)

~~~
  • Staff at service points need to pick items off of their shelves
  • Staff prints pick slips for all items with effective locations associated with their selected SP
  • Staff retrieves items from shelves
  • Staff scans (checks in) the item at their SP
    • If the item's effective location's SP matches the patron's selected pickup SP
      • Then staff is prompted to print a hold slip
      • Item's status is changed to awaiting pickup
      • Staff places item on hold shelf
      • Patron is notified that the item is available and awaiting pickup
    • If the patron requested a different pick up SP
      • Then staff is prompted to print a transit slip
      • Item's status is changed to in transit
      • Staff places item in bin for transit to the requested pickup SP
      • Item is transited to requested pickup SP
      • Staff at requested pickup SP scans (checks in) the item when received
        • Then staff is prompted to print a hold slip
        • Item's status is changed to awaiting pickup
        • Staff places item on hold shelf
        • Patron is notified that the item is available and awaiting pickup
Debra Howell Andy Horbal - I just added clarification to this feature. I don't believe Cornell needs this feature.
Items always have assigned effective locations so I'm a bit confused by the way this feature is written. chiara storti is this feature still needed for BNCF? If so, could you give an example of how requesting is working for you all right now without this feature being implemented?
I'll try to explain the BNCF workflow.
The BNCF items don't have the location. The item is retrieved considering only the call number  (the call number was created on the base of some internal criteria, that allow them to identify the location - room/building - where the item is located). So, before migrating the items in FOLIO, we associated to them a 'virtual' (because it doesn't actually exist in the library) location. A location is associated to one or more SP. The SPs in the BNCF library are the points where the patron can decide to pickup the item and read it. Remember that the most important service of the BNCF is the loan in the library and not out the library.
The BNCF patron, via OPAC, send a request, choosing the pickup SP (that doesn't match with the physical location where the book is located, but it corresponds to the room where the patron choose to read the book). This request is sent immediately to the SP printers (in each pickup service point there is a printer). The BNCF operator takes this print request and go in to the stock to retrieve the book and bring it to the pickup SP/room chosen by patron.
Sometimes the staff needs to re-print the request (for problem to the printer -not online -or because they lose) the request.
So, to answer to your question: yes, they still need this feature.
Thank you Erin Nettifee for the message and thank you, Annalisa Di Sabato, for the analysis. I confirm that this feature is important for BNCF.
