This is a new feature, that explains the low calculated rank.

We (Cornell) think that this would be useful for RA folks, but isn't essential for MVP.

Comment by Andrea Loigman [ 05/Aug/19 ]

This could be immensely helpful, especially since we tend to get things in multiple formats. Becomes even more important if we aren't going to get the separate RA inventory view.

More importantly- material type is supposed to be a component of loan rules so I'm not sure how this can be anything other than MVP.

After further discussion, Cornell decided to rank this as "go-live,' so we do not disagree with Andrea.

Andrea Loigman we have already implemented material type and it can be used in circ rules. Institutions can CRUD their own material types and assign them to items. They can then create circ rules that apply to one or more material types. This is all complete in FOLIO and has been for quite a while.

This feature ( UXPROD-1923 Open ) is about allowing institutions to create material type groupings or "categories" so that, when you are selecting a material type in Inventory, the menu of material types (which could be long) is organized by these categories. That is the full scope of this feature. It has absolutely no functional impact on anything in circ rules or anywhere else beyond the menu used for selecting material types in the item record.

It seems that Charlotte Whitt also envisions the ability to leverage these categories for filtering Inventory by Material type (per her attached mockup) but that is definitely not in scope for this feature which is already underestimated in any case at less than 1 day frontend and backend.
