 Description

Export of MARC Bib records from MARCcat (in which formats? MARC-JSON? MARC-21?)
Wouldn't export actually be from SRS, rather than MARCcat?

Exporting Instance records from Inventory and SRS - is a part of UXPROD-141 Closed

We believe this is exporting MARC bibliographic data from source record storage, not from MARCstorage?
If we are incorrect, we will want to re-rank.

Hi lew235 Yes, I think exporting will be from SRS, not from MARCcat storage. Magda Zacharska we should aim to make that clear in the feature name and description.

Comment by Tom Wilson [ 26/Aug/19 ]

What does export from MARCcat mean? Export to SRS? Export to other entity? If SRS is considered the "database of record" , wouldn't that be the source of export if sending data to other systems?

Comment by Ann-Marie Breaux (Inactive) [ 26/Aug/19 ]

HI Tom Wilson I changed the title of this feature to "Export of MARC Bib records from FOLIO" to lessen the confusion. Yes, you're exactly right that the records MARC records would be exported from SRS. Magda Zacharska is in charge of the Export epic and starting work on it.

Comment by Jenn Colt [ 26/Aug/19 ]

Given that this was not under a PO when cap-mvp was done, will this be reevaluated for cap-mvp when work begins?

Alabama needs to have this data exported in UTF-8.

Magda Zacharska and Ann-Marie Breaux, does this differ from UXPROD-141 Closed and how?

Comment by Magda Zacharska [ 11/Sep/19 ]

Cate Boerema - it does differ by source and format of the exported record. This Jira refers to exporting bib records from source record - those are MARC records. UXPROD-141 Closed refers to exporting data from inventory and those are in json format. They might be an overlap in the records that are stored in both places but their format will be different. Ann-Marie Breaux - do you agree?

Thanks Magda Zacharska!

So, if I am understanding correctly, this feature is about exporting the source MARC records from source record storage (we should probably change the title of this feature to reflect that)? As such it would include bibs imported into SRS in MARC and bibs created in MARCcat (when available). I would not include anything created directly in Inventory? Does it follow then that, until MARCcat is working, you'd basically just be exporting the same MARC records you imported?

UXPROD-141 Closed is about exporting from inventory and MARC21 would be an available option. This export would include all instances in FOLIO including those created in Inventory. There may be data loss with this option because any original MARC records imported are first transformed into Inventory records and then transformed back into MARC.

Forgive me if these are stupid questions. I'm just trying to wrap my head around the distinctions between these features.

Comment by Tom Wilson [ 12/Sep/19 ]

Cate Boerema Not stupid at all. I think we will have to contend with some operations producing somewhat less robust records than we imported. But let's be clear about how the mapping gets done; if creation or edits are done in Inventory (and there is a map to MARC), all data included in the Inventory record would need to be available in the exported MARC record. Also, do we have documentation on what gets lost when MARC records are imported into Inventory? Thanks.

Cate Boerema Magda Zacharska Tom Wilson Short version for everyone - both of these features are tied to the Export epic. Magda is just starting to refine what that epic means and how the various features comprise the epic. I'm sure the features will change, both in description, plus probably needing to add some. It's definitely helpful to have this requirements discussion going on in the comments, so thank you for that.

As to what gets lost from the MARC records when mapped to Inventory - NOTHING gets lost. All the data is still there, in the MARC record in Source Record Storage. So if you plan to export in MARC, the export would 1) pull all the existing MARC records and 2) for Instances without underlying MARC, have a way to create a simplified mapping from the Instance into a MARC Bib.

And remember for Instances with underlying MARC, the user will be prevented from editing any of the instance fields that are controlled/mapped from the underlying MARC. So the Instance will never be out of sync with the underlying MARC in terms of bibliographic data.

This is great news, Ann-Marie Breaux! But now I am even more confused about the distinction between this issue and UXPROD-141 Closed The reason I am hammering on about this is that UXPROD-141 Closed was marked cap-mvp and this one wasn't. Questions are arising that the cap planning group can't answer because the distinction between the features isn't clear to us. Given the planned solution you described, I think we might want to consider merging these two features.

Comment by Magda Zacharska [ 13/Sep/19 ]

It make sense that UXPROD-141 Closed was marked as cap-mvp and this one wasn't because not all libraries will have MARC Bib records but all will have instance records stored in FOLIO. Also the process of exporting form inventory storage (instance data) and record storage (MARC Bib records) will be different even though the end result might be the same.

Comment by Jakub Skoczen [ 19/Sep/19 ]

Ann-Marie Breaux is there an equivalent functionality for exporting data directly from SRS? If so would it be available through the UI?

Comment by Ann-Marie Breaux (Inactive) [ 19/Sep/19 ]

Jakub Skoczen We're still getting organized on the export side, so copying Magda Zacharska Unclear exactly what the UI will be yet, and whether there is a need to have a UI exporting from SRS directly, in addition to MARCcat.

Comment by Magda Zacharska [ 19/Sep/19 ]

I'm meeting with Tiziana Possemato next week to discuss possible overlap of functionality. I will update the Jira once we have more information.

Comment by Magda Zacharska [ 11/Oct/19 ]

When exporting inventory records in MARC format - we will be exporting underlying MARC record stored in Source Record Storage (if present) or generate on the fly a simplified MARC record if there is no underlying MARC record. SRS is going to be source of truth for MARC bib records and all MARC bib records stored in MARCcat storage will have their equivalent in SRS. So at this point exporting from MARCcat seems to be redundant. Lowering PO ranking. CC:Ann-Marie Breaux, Tiziana Possemato, Charlotte Whitt

Comment by lew235 [ 14/Nov/19 ]

MARC records can be exported from SRS, which is source of truth for MARCcat. UXPROD-141 Closed covers this, thus bib export from MARCcat is superfluous.
