 Description

(Prompted by Chalmers visit.) If checking in items for a specific patron, or if library permits self-checkin, then prompting scan of patron card & using that to learn that patron has items awaiting pickup or items that are billed, etc. is useful.

Note: Even for libraries that want this feature, it is still useful to be able to checkin items without bringing up information about the patron (e.g., checking in many books from the overnight book drop).

I don't think most patrons are around when a library scans their items in--patrons usually drop off their returns and leave.

The description was unclear for Duke when reviewing for prioritization.

A - Is this asking for a feature where, if you are checking in an item, a message appears to tell you the patron who had the loan has other items available?

Or B - is this asking for a feature where, if you are checking in an item, you are prompted to scan the card and look up the patron's info to determine if they have other items available?

We would find A useful, but B seems like feature bloat and not really needed, since staff can go look up the patron's info themselves. And as Holly notes, for institutions like us that do not have self return systems, having that prompt is not useful since the majority of the time the patron is not there when the item is actually discharged.

Nice to have but not necessary and in come cases even problematic, thus changing ranking from R2 to R4.

Cheryl Malmborg I think we should close this - it's not defined well enough to figure out how to move it forward, and there are likely problems with trying to do this anyway.

Erin Nettifee I will close this as won't do.  It was proposed in 2018.  No institution seems to have a real need for it. It would definitely need to be optional, especially showing fees.
