 Description

Purpose: Implement an easy way to copy Item barcode from the item record. NOTE: this is lower priority than the ability to easily copy from the Instance record without drilling into the item record itself (see UIIN-177 Closed ) as it is pretty easy to just highlight the barcode on the item record and copy it.

Scenarios:

  1. Scenario
    • Given the item barcode on the item record
    • When viewed
    • Then it should be possible to quickly copy it to clipboard (direction from Filip in comments suggests we use a button or icon next to the barcode itself)
  2. Scenario
    • Given I have copied the item barcode to clipboard using the new button/icon
    • When I paste anywhere (e.g. into the item field in the Request creation form or Check out)
    • Then the item barcode I copy should be pasted

Even quicker, what if there were a copy-to-clipboard icon right next to the barcode, like GitHub provides for commit hashes (button to the left of the commit-hash 837f9e1)?

Nice idea Zak Burke - I need to run it by Filip (UX), and Khalilah Gambrell (accessibility).

Filip Jakobsen and Khalilah Gambrell: Zak Burke suggest above a button to the left of the barcode data in the Item record

We'd probably need both the action menu and the button.

Charlotte Whitt I think a copy barcode option should be next to the item field. Having it under the dropdown will confuse the user because Copy item works one way and Copy item barcode works another way. Plus the copy item barcode is essentially an easy way to copy the entire barcode, to have it behind a dropdown requires a user to click twice versus once.

You may want to consider having a copy button similar to Copy link that appears on the Send reset password email modal.

Also is the reason for this user story, difficulty in copying the item? From an accessibility standpoint either implementation is fine. I just do not think having copy item barcode behind a dropdown is the best user experience.

Having a "copy to clipboard" button next to the number itself sounds like a great idea, and something we might want to reuse for other fields (e.g. HRIDs, PO numbers, user barcodes, etc.) - could be a nice little addition overall. I usually just do this by right clicking on the number - is that good enough, or might we need an explicit button?

Hi Filip Jakobsen - do you have some UX thoughts and guidelines on this matter - see the description and all comments above. Thanks

Comment by Filip Jakobsen [ 05/Mar/19 ]

Thanks for adding me, Charlotte Whitt.

We should do what Khalilah is showing in the attachment with the password: An input field with the relevant value; and a button to copy this value. This makes it easy to copy the value on all operating systems and browsers — even browsers where it might not be allowed to programmatically overwrite the "clipboard" (the copied value) — I think this might be the case on some mobile platforms. If users would like this action available at all times, it should be available from the Pane Header Dropdown (in the Pane Header Dropdown, it should also exist in the form of an input field and a button). It would be useful to have it next to the value in the record in any case, as Zak suggests (but not in the way Github has implemented it).

Let me know if you would like further input from me on this — thanks!

Charlotte Whitt it looks like this story needs to be updated per Filip's comments above. Marking it draft for now

Charlotte Whitt - I created this user story for Filip to develop a design for this: https://folio-org.atlassian.net/browse/UX-311

Thanks Khalilah Gambrell

Seems like many people agree this is a pain-point. It's super easy to implement a "copy to clipboard" button, but I understand why we may not want to implement a short-term solution if the feature is likely to change in the long-term.

Filip Jakobsen, can you elaborate your comment that this "would be useful ... but not in the way Github has implemented it"?

Comment by Cate Boerema (Inactive) [ 04/Jul/19 ]

I think there has been some confusion about where the pain point lies on this. Copying a barcode from the item record itself is really not that difficult (highlight and copy). The real challenge is with copying the barcode from the list in the instance record: UIIN-177 Closed and the design challenges there are tougher. We do need UX input on that and there is a story assigned to Filip Jakobsen: UX-311 Closed Filip Jakobsen and Khalilah Gambrell, do you have an update on the status of UX-311 Closed ?

Comment by Ann-Marie Breaux (Inactive) [ 08/Jul/19 ]

Yes, exactly Cate Boerema. Copying the barcode from the item record is fine. It's copying the barcode from the item view in the Instance that's a pain.

Comment by Charlotte Whitt [ 08/Jul/19 ]

@cate and Ann-Marie Breaux

  • This story UIIN-501 is about copy barcode from the Item record, and
  • UIIN-177 Closed is about copy item barcode from the Item record list (associated to the holdings record)

Maybe we can close UIIN-501 Closed as won't do, then?

Comment by Ann-Marie Breaux (Inactive) [ 08/Jul/19 ]

That makes sense to me Charlotte Whitt, or at least make this story P-4. UIIN-177 Closed is what Chalmers was reporting, and is definitely the bigger pain point.

I think closing this as Won't do would reduce noise and confusion. I'll just do that now. Thanks!
