Proposal Text
In many ways the technology of the core services in libraries has remained stagnant. Integrated library systems often remain closed, are built on legacy architectures and are fundamentally monolithic in nature. By contrast, other fields have seen technological ecosystems open up and deliver unprecedented innovation. An open environment can bring about radical change by harnessing the power of global participation, knowledge and talent. The time now has come for the library field to follow suite.
FOLIO, an acronym for the phrase “Future of Libraries is Open”, is a unique, open source, community collaboration of library professionals and developers who are rethinking the role of the integrated library system in library services. The FOLIO platform will support traditional resource management functionality but is open throughout and extensible at its core. By providing a platform for innovation, libraries and service providers can create applications and functionality that will deliver new and exciting services to libraries. Since its inception in 2015, librarians have been working with user experience specialists to distill the workflow requirements in library environments relying increasingly on digital resources while needing to cultivate their physical collections. At the same time, developers have been building a platform and the core apps that fulfill traditional integrated library system technology while developing new apps and new integrations with other software that will address current workflow challenges.
In this presentation, attendees will learn about the transformative nature of the FOLIO project. It will feature librarians rethinking their library workflows and imagining new services, as well as developers giving highlights of the platform’s first release and a roadmap for future developments.
Learning outcomes:
• Attendees will gain an in-depth understanding of the FOLIO community and the thought process behind creating an open source community around library platforms
• Attendees will learn about the various communication channels for the FOLIO community, the purpose of each and how to participate in them
• Attendees will understand the highlights of the first release of FOLIO code and preview future plans for development
