 Description

Discussion: What should users see when they first log into FOLIO?

UX suggestion is:

  • There is no FOLIO "home page" per say (at least not in v1)
  • Instead, the app that has been placed in the left-most position of the app toolbar (in the top nav) will open by default
    • This would require us to allow users to reposition the app icons in the toolbar, of course
  • Ultimately, UX would also like to see us implement statefullness across sessions so the system remembers what you were working with last and re-opens that

Filip Jakobsen, please correct as-needed if I have gotten any of this wrong.

There is some meaningful conversation in STCOR-123 Closed on this, but I thought it was worth making this its own issue.

So I'm reading through the history here as it relates to FOLIO-1007 Open (an "About" page), and I have one question about this:

Hi guys. Filip Jakobsen's vision for this was that there wouldn't be a home page (at least not for v1). Instead, the page the user would land on when they open FOLIO would be the app that is in the left-most position in the applications toolbar in the top nav.

I'm thinking about the URLs. There is a URL for the root level (http://folio-demo.aws.indexdata.com) and a URL for the Users app (http://folio-demo.aws.indexdata.com/users). Is Filip's idea that the first URL (at the root level) would somehow redirect to the second URL (for the Users app)? If not, then there is still a root level that contains something (where it says "Welcome, the Future Of Libraries Is OPEN!" now).

Good question, Peter Murray.

The more I think about the requirement to have the left-most app be the "landing page", the more I wonder if it's actually pretty complicated.... Let's consider some options:

  1. Left-most app is landing page - For this to work well, we need to implement the ability to re-position the apps in the toolbar and for the system to look at the user's preference there. Plus (I think) we need to redirect per Peter's comment above. Until we have implemented the ability to re-position the apps, we can just look at whatever is the left-most app for the system and use that (currently Users) but some users don't have access to that app, so we'll need some handling around that. Plus there is apparently some value to developers in having the home page and we'd need to consider what to do with that...
  2. Keep a home page - For this to work well, I think we need some more meaningful content on the home page or at least a better design. The requirements and dev effort would really depend upon what we put on this page.
  3. Statefullness across sessions - I think this is what UX ultimately wants. The system would remember what you were looking at last time you logged in. This is non-trivial and doesn't really alleviate the need for a system default.

Maybe none of these are terribly important since you can bookmark whatever app you like to start with and go there upon log in (this already works).

I wonder if Hkaplanian has an opinion on what we should strive for for v1.

If we stay with the second option – keep a home page – we can make the content of that page what we've been talking about for the "about" page ( FOLIO-1007 Open ). Then if one of the other scenarios comes into being, the content can move to a separate "about" page.

That would work for me.

The "Welcome..." text on the existing home page was recently re-styled and, IMO, the home page looks fine as-is. Probably even better than the legal mumbo jumbo one would see on an About page, but I guess it really depends what we decide for that page.

If a user want's top open a certain app by default, they just bookmark that app instead of the home page. Seems like a good v1 solution to me.

Yes! That is a proper developer's solution

I really like the bookmark idea. Why over think this? I think this would be fine for V1.
That said, It would be nice if somewhere when permissions are set, the default app get selected for that particular group of users. So once they login, their default appears.
Finally, about the landing page of today. I imagined that eventually that would be a customized (per user) dashboard that could be the default page. I assume in those cases, it appears like a FOLIO app because I assume it will be or currently is.

Thanks for your input, Harry!

I don't think this would work, as users can be assigned multiple permission sets. How would the system know which permission set to look at for the default app? I think Filip's suggestion that users be able to select their default app is a good one, but it seems like we are all in agreement that it doesn't need to be v1 since users can just bookmark their favorite home page.

FOLIO home isn't currently an app. It's just a page. But, if/when we replace it with a customized dashboard, we can convert it to an app.
