Assess the work for supporting the UNIMARC Bibliographic format in FOLIO

Description

Current situation or problem: Some libraries in Europe use the UNIMARC format for their bibliographic data. FOLIO currently supports MARC-21, but not other formats (yet). Analysis is needed to determine what changes would be needed in various modules to support UNIMARC.

In scope

  • Review the UNIMARC format in detail

  • Determine which record types need to be supported (only Bibliographic, or also Holdings and/or Authorities?)

  • Outline the impact on the following apps

    • Data Import (SRS storage, DI profiles, DI workflows)

    • Data Export

    • Inventory (UNIMARC-to-Instance mapping)

    • quickMARC

    • OAI-PMH endpoint

    • EDGE RTAC (if taken from the bib record)

    • Authorities

    • Record import from z39.50 sources (Inventory single record imprort)

    • z39.50 server

  • Draft features to implement support in the various apps

  • Discuss and coordinate with the various POs

Out of scope

  • Implementing support for UNIMARC; this feature is only for analysis and planning, NOT implementation

Use case(s)

  • Same use cases as for MARC-21, except based on UNIMARC source records

Proposed solution/stories

  • TBD
